So yeah the whole Stannis scene was pretty fucked. Everything else was fine. Not a very dramatic episode nine though. The fighting pit scene could and should have been way more intense, but I suppose that would have required a significantly higher budget.

That was not Stannis Baratheon, that’s a mad power man with delusions of grandeur while stuck in a Messiah complex. Stannis is my favorite character, to destroy him like that is... It hurts, and using such a cheap shot like little Shireen. Why don’t you make Jamie rape Brienne and then slit her throat too, just because?

 

Yeah, I'm done with the show. And maybe even the books, if that "Inside Episode 9" bullshit D & D said about George giving them the idea is true.

 

I'd bet twenty on Shireen being burned is George's idea, yeah (it's a pretty common theory, maybe even involved in Jon's thing; eaten by dragons), but Stannis being the one to do it ain't (Melisandre, probably). Given where things are in the books, it's very unlikely Book!Stannis would be in the position to do this, character-wise and location-wise and plot-wise. But if he burns her in the books, then at least the execution would be better.

Stannis doing it makes no sense. Family and duty mean everything to him. Fuck this change. I would say I would stop watching but I know I won't... I still want to know.

Man. Basically the worst case scenario for GoT playing out right now- without having to follow the plot from the books, a sneaky-bad writing team is sending it straight into pointless-tragedy-porn territory.

 

In the books, I don't think you're wrong. In this instance, everyone should have seen this coming for a long time. Especially after Melisandre told Stannis in Season III that he'd betray pretty much everything he stood for. I loved the scene, because it fit into the story arc that the show's writers created, and they've been building up to it for the better part of three seasons. I hated the scene, because GoT's best moments for all of us were the totally unpredictable ones. I felt a bit betrayed by this scene for that reason.

Even if I loved watching Stannis murder his daughter because he'll do anything to win.

As for what I thought of the rest of the episode, the Ollie-murders-Jon foreshadowing is a little to heavy-handed at this point, and Dany/Drogon had the worst CGI ever.

 

Doesn't make the show any less retarded, especially given the touching, emotional scene with Stannis and Shireen at the Wall, earlier in the season.

It's just Dumb&Dumber's fanfiction at this point, nothing more.

 

From a more casual viewer perspective (who hasn't read the books) I didn't have a problem with what Stannis did. I mean yes, I did, but it didn't surprise me. He's been Melisandre's bitch for many seasons now. What made you guys think he'd oppose her in this?

 

Well if you wanna go with just the show, how about him literally telling Melisandre two episodes ago he wasn't going to burn his daughter when she suggested it? And a few weeks before that what with his emotional speech about her being his daughter and shit? Oh, but it's such a good twist when he goes back on it because he's consumed with his pursuit of the throne! It's such a shock! People will be talking about it for weeks! It's Episode 9, let's make it memorable! Oh, and look, his wife also turned around her hatred on Shireen just in time to be upset this was happening! Bad Stannis! You are no longer the Mannis!

And hey, what's that? Next week, Brienne is going to show up and kill him and we're going to cheer for her doing so? What a swell story!

(And much like the Sansa thing, it's more of the revulsion from book readers side. Yes, separate stories and whatnot, but separate good stories would also be appreciated. Stannis has been fucked over from the start in the show and this isn't that much of a shock, but it lacks nuance and, I dunno, being good for a story instead of just a dramatic plot moment.)

 

Instant denial is expected when asked to kill one's own offspring. You're telling me you didn't 100% expect him to cave at some point? When has he ever not done something Melisandre asked him to? Maybe I'm missing something, can't say I follow too closely, but it was clear to me that Melisandre holds the reins, not Stannis.

 

It's the little things, like:

He didn't allow for the free folk, aside from 'Mance', to be burned alive.

He might have listened to Melisandre in the books, worked with her, but ultimately? He was never her bitch, never lusted after her like in the show, never went to the Iron Bank to beg for money (they came to him and he repelled the wildlings with his own army that was leftover from Blackwater, not foreign mercenaries).

Was there a possibility Melisandre and Selyse would have done this on their own in the book? Absolutely. But Stannis approving it? Watching it happen? No way in fucking hell.

If I'm remembering the books correct, Stannis sends out one of his men to hire out mercenaries and tells him that if he should die, that they should put Shireen on the Iron Throne as his rightful heir.

This isn't Stannis Baratheon. This is D&D's mummer show.

I'm sad to have watched Stephen Dillane play a desecration of such a character.

 

I wonder where Melisandre keeps the jar with Stannis' balls.

That blood magic will have to pull of a mass murder in Winterfell to save Stannis' ass now that the army is freezing with no supplies.

I was waiting for Arya to sneak inside Meryn's room and open his throat the way she does oysters with those deft hands of hers, but alas, no cigar.

I wanted more from Dorne, but I guess there won't be much going on if the boss is a reasonable guy. There are flashes of Oberynness, but the illness broke him.

The biggest, baddest dragon in town is back... then immediately leaves. I'm sorry, did Daenerys forget how she got her army? Why the fuck is she running away? What happens now? Will the dragon take her to Valyria?

Of course Olly stabbing Jon will be the last scene of the finale, amirite?

It's wish fulfillment, I know, but it'd be really nice if a bunch of soldiers slit some throats *cough*Stannis*cough*RedWitch*doublecough* and deserted. It was plain that at least some of them weren't okay with their king burning his kid at the stake. God, Stannis is such a cunt. Hang the guards because reasons. What if Ramsay was just sneaky? Fuck it, hang 'em anyway.

The show seems intent on leaving me with only one character I give a shit about - right before he gets shanked by a whiny cunt.

I haven't read the books, but I pick up some spoilers here and there. It's hard not to, with how popular ASOIAF is. So, let's see-

Probably not going to happen in the show. The pit scene had an entirely different feel. A Valyria flight is more likely. Or maybe to Asshai or some other weirdness.

 

The burning of Shireen makes some sense and I do believe it will happen in the books to bring Jon back, but having Stannis be the one to let it happen ruins his character. Why do that to him after building him up all season? Just push the blame on Mel, most people already hate her - people were starting to like the Mannis...
