Kiddo I'm fine with as I've heard a few older people use it before. Just use it sparingly. I do agree that Danny triggering is... usually stupid. His relationship with Taylor is important, but it loses its importance once he becomes a cape. Then he has power. The point is he's impotent as a person. That makes a lot of authors frustrated with him, of course, but he serves an important role by being powerless.

What makes me hate him sometimes is his fanon portrayal. He'll make some ridiculous demand of Taylor like, "Don't use your powers!" And he'll guilt her into being hurt by her enemies - it's stupid. As much as Taylor might love her father, I don't think she could ever be convinced not to defend herself or her friends. It just makes Danny seem like a dick to ask that of her.

Not sure if it has been rec'd here, but here's one:

    The Slippery Slope

It's basically a story about Taylor joining up with the E88 to counter Sophia's bullying.

Obviously, it's slow-going, as she doesn't accept their views readily, which makes Taylor's change plausible and all the more interesting.

    Excellent writing too.

Slippery Slope is a worse version of 'Welcome to the Empire'. It's probably ack's best story but that really isn't saying much. I

In light of recent events I'd say it's more comparable to George Martin.

If you're talking about the Sansa thing, doesn't that not happen in the books?

There's plenty of rape in the books. That said the T.V show probably has more, I stopped watching after Jaime raped Cersei.

I do not believe that in character that word was actually used... if you do NOT count PHO. :3

Actually... I think Taylor was the only one who actually said it... and she used in conjunction to someone else in Goblin Queen... :3

Also in Goblin Queen... no shipping chart. No revenge on the Trio. No the world keeps dumping on Taylor because of the Trio. In fact, Taylor is growing beyond Sophia and Emma. Madison gets to be her little minion. :>

Also I treat characters with plot respect and not keep them one dimensional. :3

There's not actually that much. Off the top of my head, I can think of only a few

    1) Elia Martell and the Mountain. Happened 10+ years ago, but everyone remembers.
    2) Tysha and Lannister guardsmen. Happened 10+ years ago, Tyrion tells the story of his first wife.
    3) Lollys Stokeworth. The first "off camera" rape in the books I think. Happens when the peasants in King's Landing riot. The Hound rescues Sansa from a similar fate. TyrekLannister goes missing, the High Septon is eaten alive, and a kingsguard (preston greenfield) and the keep's master-of-arms (aron santagar) are killed Oddly enough, I don't think Lollys is mentioned at all in the show until Tyrion's trial when Bronn tells him he's married now.
    4) Jeyne Poole disguised as Arya Stark (Sansa in the show for lolReasons), married off to Ramsay Bolton.
    5) If #4 is considered rape, then maybe so can number 5, when Dani is unwillingly married off to Khal Drogo
?) Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Unconfirmed, but has been predicted for many years now that Jon Snow is the result.

Anyways, back on subject, I tried to get into Slippery Slope, but it wasn't really working for me. I just don't like the premise, so it was a bit hard to get into.

Also, I don't think I've ever read enough of a bad story where "Kiddo" really bothers me - I tend to give up a story pretty quickly if it is obviously shit. And yeah, hearing the word does remind me of Kill Bill as well.

3 chapters as of now and it is certainly amusing. However, as already said, I can see the humour getting stale in later chapters. I also don't really see how being a crazy, spoiled and outright delusional emperor translates into being such a badass in a situation where he has none of the support structure that allowed and enabled him in the first place. Nero could do what he did and get (mostly) away with it for so long because he was the Emperor and had troops, wealth, tradition and whatnot on his side. And correct me if I am wrong, but I also don't think he was a badass fighter or anything.

So, while I am amused and entertained, I also don't really get this story. I suppose I am taking things too seriously, but meh.

Yeah, it's fun, worth checking out and Nero was strangely likeable, being the crazy sexist racist that (s)he is. We'll see where this goes.

Basically about an OC who is evacuated from "Earth Tet" during Golden Morning, and triggers as a tinker. It's been on the interesting side so far - though the latest update was a bit cringe worthy with it's references to /b/. Pretty enjoyable, overall.

I've never killed him off... well, I did turn him into an evil vampire once. (Don't ask. Bad deadfic.)

I generally find Danny hard to write. I think I've only done two fics that focus on him in a major way.

Hello, Taylor! has him in it as a matter of necessity. At the time the popular thing to do seemed to be to kill or sideline Danny, so contrarianism pushed me into doing a story about them having The Talk. He's not really a character in the story so much as a plot device. The emotional arc is all Taylor's. The fears embodied in Danny are just the obstacle she has to overcome.

Party of Three is a Danny-POV, but it's more a mood piece than an actual story. It really needs to be several times longer than it currently is to work as a legitimate story. All it does is show Danny in static denial.

Which, to bring things back around, is why I guess I have trouble writing Danny as a prominent character. He's a bit like Amy in that he desperately wants to conserve whatever he has left rather than risk gambling away anything to improve things. You need to kick him into change. To make things harder, he doesn't have a good supporting cast to bounce off of. Taylor is the person he's closest to, and he doesn't know Taylor that well. Him becoming proactive means him being a better dad, and that risks undercutting Taylor's agency since Worm is big about her growth (or lack thereof) into adulthood.

That's something I think ACP does well, actually. Danny is largely a background element that only has meaty onscreen time every half-dozen arcs of so. He never much changes. His biggest moments all stem from willfully not blocking Taylor's character growth: pretending to sleep for when Aeon comes back from the Anti-E88 Rally, being Taylor's beard when she sues the school with her own money, and generally carrying on with the knowledge he can't do anything for Taylor. He angst about it to Kurt but never does anything major that's contrary to Taylor's wishes. He's generally inept. Standing up to a bully in that Endbringer shelter gets his leg broken. I don't think it's coincidental that Danny's one onscreen action moment -- while mind controlled, admittedly -- is a betrayal of Taylor that nearly kills her. Their conversation about birthday cake ahead of the Butcher fight is basically Danny finally acknowledging to Taylor's face that he accepts she's an adult.

I rewatched a bit of Daria recently, and now every time I see kiddo I hear Jake's voice saying it with his manic, and slightly crazy, voice. :)

Copacetic just disappointed me a bit, another one succumbed to 'Bullshit', noticed a few in the newer chapters.

    Yer a Witch, Taylor!
Silly, but kinda amusing, not to be taken seriously, among other things, Blasto (not an alliance I've seen before manages to create a Phoenix and Unicorn,

I think that oneshot was the closest I've ever seen a story not exist. Things got said, but it was of so little interest that not a single thing is memorable about it, except for how painfully average it was.

Danny's defining characteristic in canon is arguably impotent rage.

That's hard to write as a PoV - readers will accept almost anything else before they accept ineffectual PoVs.

It's hard to write as a supporting character, because if the supporting character isn't doing anything, then why are they included? Sure, you can turn it around and write the negative image, focus on his failures... but that's trickier.

Making him more active risks taking agency from Taylor (fine, if she's not the protagonist... but she usually is) for the same reason that children's/YA literature suffers from a massive shortage of competent adults: so very many problems would end (from the kid's perspective) with 'and then they told a competent adult, who took care of it. The End.'

Personally, ended up opting for writing about Taylor's relationship to his absence, trying to make him more of a presence in death than he had been in life - not exactly getting him out of the way, I suppose, but dodging the above set of problems.

Thinking about it, there's probably a role for Danny written strongly. No powers, no exceptional negotiation skills (he's not Quinn Calle or Glen Chambers, who are canonically near the top of human competence in their fields) - just a father. Good opportunity there for everyman heroics (less successfully punching out villains, more being willing to take on that kind of impossible fight because the alternative is unacceptable, more being willing to undertake the day-to-day difficult work of loving and raising a child who is reenacting the eighth Egyptian plague). Major problem in harmonizing that with canon is his ineffectuality. Possible to make it work, but would need heavy investment on how the canonical problems were intractable, shift the frame from 'ineffectual' to 'determined, despite no good options.'

This is what makes this oneshot so boring, there is absolutely no conflict, Ack is pretty heavy handed with his Fix-fic tendencies in general, here it's just taken to its extreme.

Ack's Recoil is okay. There are parts that are unreadable, but it's on average readable. Maybe I just like the tone?

Welcome to the Empire is good...ish. I'm not comfortable with it. Honestly, I've never met a skinhead, but even a well-adjusted skinhead just isn't something I can see Taylor abide by as a totally fresh parahuman. She's set in her ways; you could break her as a person and then she might be able to fit in with them, but I think she would identify them with repugnant bullies. A hardened Taylor could work with them to advance a specific subset of goals, but she's too close to them in this. Purity is the only sympathetic one in their lot and I just don't find it believeable Taylor would go to lengths to stick with her. Hanging around with skinheads would make anyone uncomfortable, I think, especially when your reputation is on the line. I could see this working out okay if Taylor had a previous history and a stronger backstory for her behavior; but... Well, on a positive note, I think the story will be more interesting once Coil does his thing. Once she's been outed, her safety net will be taken away and she'll have to become ruthless and uncompromising. Bullying on a widespread scale; a total destruction of her character and future as a neo-Nazi will have to transform her into a new person. I mean, it's going bt extremely traumatic. How that's all handled is going to make or break the story.
