No idea how she's important though. Her mom's probably a scary mage or something, but...

Yay, finally a chapter I didn't have to force myself to read through. Back to enjoying this story.

Great chapter, but it felt too short. Oh well. But I was really interested to see how he would interact with his classmates and Kael, but he just mentioned them, a shame. Jade was the spider girl right or one of Zach’s groupies?

I kind of like that we keep seeing so many characters pop back up, but we never know which will actually be important in the end. It keeps things unpredictable, not knowing who will hold the next clue to the mysteries at hand.

Will little girl's family turn out to be experienced mind mages? Or some tutoring with Ibery will have her using her library skills to figure out more about the invaders and their motives? Or maybe they'll just be like the classmates, background characters re-appearing occasionally but without much significance, and Red Robe will turn out to have been Xvim all along.

You know, I don't think we've seen Xvim do magic except burning a shape into one of the cards. Think we'll ever get a practical demonstration of what he can do after focusing on shaping for so long?

I wonder how Xvim stands compared to the other teachers.

Once Zorian's shaping skills became "adequate" Xvim will probably have him practise simple spells until he can cast them with just a gesture and without any mana wasted...

Invictus: By "spider girl" you probably mean Tinami Aope, the girl fascinated by everything with eight legs. She's the one who taught Zorian the invisibility spell and got introduced to Novelty.

^ Don't worry about it, I forgot she even existed. Keeping up with all the characters in between updates is a real pain.

    Update

---------- Post automerged at 10:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:07 AM ----------

I'm pretty much convinced that Rea is a cat shifter after learning that she has excellent hearing and that shifters gain the abilities of their animal. If that's the case then she may have been killed for the same reason as the people on the list Kael gave Zorian.

I look forward to finding out what is up with Rea. Last chapter she seemed to already know what Zorian told her about the cranium rats, or at least suspect, since she seemed surprised that he knew much about them. That combined with the fact that Zorian found her incredibly hard to read with his own Mind Magic implies that even if she isn't powerful herself she's had some training in how to protect her thoughts from those kinds of scans (be they from Zorian or from cranium rats). Couple all that to her brutal death, and, well... something is going on there. And I look forward to finding out what.

    Otherwise yeah, good update.

Minor quibble - Zorian knows that Rea has incredible hearing, then if I remember right he leaves to talk to Kael in the basement and lets all sorts of things slip. Shouldn't he have been slightly concerned that Rea (who was still in the house?) might have overheard something she shouldn't? She was already hearing through a bunch of walls, who's to say she couldn't hear him in the basement?

I don't think that's going to be plot relevant so much as it might be a minor slip on the author's part, where she might have had Zorian at least consider the possibility, but eh.

    Yay updates!

I'm still holding on to my pet theory that Rea(and by extension Nochka) is a cat shifter rather than shady. The animal soul would explain some of her mannerisms and supernatural level of hearing. They would also be naturally kind of guarded considering shifters seem to receive discrimination as some kind of sub-humans.

As for why a cat? It ties into her interest in the cranium rats and that cat Zorian encountered in an earlier restart. It had too strong of an emotional response to be a common animal.

I guess we will find out their secret soon one way or another.

As for the chapter itself, deep-diving was even more dangerous than I expected. Considering Zorian needed a couple attempts just to limit his attempts to light damage much less do it perfectly, it makes me wonder how big the body count would be to learn to do it with structured magic.

Meh, maybe. There are plenty of other explanations that would explain those mannerisms.

You don't need to be a cat shifter to take an interest in a bunch of mind-reading brain-exposed-looking rats hanging around your house.

But this point I have to give you. Despite me finding your theory ridiculous until this point, it now holds water with me. Because even if they aren't cat-shifters, something was going on with that cat.

Another point for your theory though is that if Nochka can shift into a cat, it explains why no one has been able to find her since the brutal murder of her parents.

Gonna go back and read that scene from the first chapter again now.

Edit: The scene is in Chapter 12, for anyone else looking for it. Starts with this bit: "There was a small-ish cat, probably a very young one, looking forlornly at the raging waters of the stream."

Yup, that's gotta be related somehow.

The story is really interesting again, and a such, the chapters are once more way too short.

Pretty cold planning, to allow a little girl to be kidnapped by an insane murder cult in order to track them. That's one big slide down the slippery slope. Let's see if he is detached enough to follow through with that.

I find myself oddly interested in Akoja and hope that she gets involved more in future time loops.

So... How do you think Kyron identified Zorian as the mind mage? It was obvious that someone was fucking with the warbeasts, but it's not like Aranean-style telepathy has any outward tells... Was he just guessing?
