He didn't. He just saw Zorian dealing with the heavy hitters with regular magic.

Kyron is a trained battle mage, and mind magic is apparently somewhat rare. He probably (1) noticed that someone was doing it, then (2) looked around to locate someone not casting typical battle spells and (3) paid attention to see if they were focused on the creatures that suddenly developed loyalty issues.

I don't have a problem accepting that Kyron in particular is capable of that. Unless it's implied to be something else in the story I don't think it's anything to analyze further, personally.

I disagree, I think he figured out Zorian was using mind magic. Was there any mention of Zorian using anything else? His comment about that being how he'd be most useful to the fight implies that he even acknowledges that Kyron knows.

I never got bored with the story, since even the slower chapters had something that interested me, but it's fun to be back in the swing of things with the invasion.

Regarding Nochka... yeah, a bit cold. I'm curious as well to see if he follows through with that plan, but he might end up on a middle path. Place the spell as a just in case, try to prevent it, and then be unable to stop it happening anyway.

BUT!... Nochka was kidnapped here. Zorian seems to have confirmed that via his mind magic. But clues from earlier loops indicate that she wasn't kidnapped, right? That's the whole reason that a lot of us were on board with the 'cat shifter' concept, because that one time Zorian saw the super sad kitten at the river. So if Nochka goes from escaping to being captured, is that just coincidence because of the other changes to the overall timeline (aranea being gone means extra monsters) or is something else going on?

    Meh.

I also started a Patreon account to donate to the author, nobody103. I'm not putting a ton of money into it, but at some point I realized that I've enjoyed this story more than a lot of the published fiction I've been reading lately. I like the idea of paying for that. If you aren't familiar with Patreon, you can basically set it up via Paypal (or whatever else) to make a donation whenever the author puts up a new chapter.

Right now he's getting about $310 per update, and seems to be trying to update every three weeks now. If that stays consistent, that's over 5k a year. Pretty awesome, imo.

    I agree, but

Yup, he mentions using blasting rods on enemies that got close.

She wasn't kidnapped because she was (presumably) dead. What makes you think she escaped the (1-2 times) Zorian saved her?

I don't follow you and don't understand what you're saying.

Current chapter: Nochka was kidnapped. We know this because Zorian invaded the minds of various cultists who had been involved. Possible he was wrong, but unlikely.

Earlier chapter: Zorian saw a kitten that was extremely sad and feeling a profound sense of loss by the river.

That kitten was probably Nochka. The sadness implies that her parents were still murdered. So it's likely that she wasn't kidnapped in previous restarts. Also possible that she was kidnapped and escaped. Or was kidnapped and being forced to do something.

Zorian never saved her in previous restarts that I know of, only her bike, so I don't know what you mean. Whether or not she is presumably dead is a moot point, isn't it?

Okay, I had a different reaction to that. I have perhaps not updated my view in light of the past few chapters, but my interpretation was that she had died in the process of trying to retrieve her bike, and that the cat seen at the river was her mother (now that we know they can turn into cats). I think that theory was first mentioned in this thread many pages ago.

(It's also possible it was just Nochka feeling sad about her bike in cat form. Unlikely, though, IMO.)

I don't understand why Nochka would return there after her parents were murdered. I also am pretty sure that the sighting was very early in the restart (it happened when Zorian accompanied what's-her-name into the Araneana tunnels for the first time), which doesn't match up well with the very late-in-the-restart murder this time around.

This is what I was referring to:
(That it was a young-ish cat, though, reinforces your interpretation. I suppose they were killed more early in previous timeskips? Weird, regardless.)

Man, it would have been hilarious if the time loop broke and Zorian stood there like an idiot after mentioning it to Kyron.

Edit: Also, the timing on the sad cat by the bridge doesn't match up with the murders at all. That happened on the 2nd day of the original loop.

The cat could be Nochka feeling sad about the bike, but I now suspect it was her mother in cat form, mourning her daughter.

Guys, not everything has to be grimdark.

If Zorian had been caught using mind magic he would not have been greeted as warmly as he was by Kyron, and I suspect at least some mention of his use of questionably legal magic would warrant at least one mention, if it had been spotted. As it is Zorian was mentioned using five blasting rods to defend people (as Qgqqqqq noted), which is the much more likely thing to be picked up on in the heat of battle, I think.

I disagree. Kyron mentioned him "messing with" the monsters, and Zorian says he felt no reason to lie that late in the loop. Kyron noticed the mind magic.

I'm not sure that all mind magic is actually illegal? I seem to remember that from some point. It's more that anyone studying is sort of... assumed to be using it illegally? So it's frowned upon? Not sure on that, at all. 50% maybe.

But Kyron seemed suspicious, and seemed willing to challenge Zorian on it before the loop restarted. So I'd say he was willing to play it rough... but he was also giving Zorian the benefit of the doubt because he saved the day. Even if he did it in a suspicious manner than a 15 year old mage shouldn't have had been able to accomplish.

Mind magic is pretty much entirely restricted and hence illegal to learn without permits and such to prevent abuse. The gray area comes in because Zorian technically has learned no restricted spells. His mind magic is a product of an inborn ability and hence there are no laws about it.

Did anybody get the feeling, that Kyron knows something about the loop?
The way he looked at him at the and and the general style of how it was written, gives me to think.

    What's grimdark about it?

I didn't get that at all, Ishaq. His reaction seemed pretty natural, from what we know of his character.

Yeah, this update was great. I love that Zoarian has begun to actually be useful even in large-scale combat.

Can't wait to see what other mindfuckery shenanigans he gets up to next.

Mind magic isn't illegal. When told that Zorian's empathy was a form of mind reading Taiven said that she didn't give him permission to read her mind. Following the implication, mind magic just needs consent to be used on a person. The issue is that Zorian should not have access to mind magic spells, not the manner he was using them in.

The thing that constantly impresses me about the story is how much foreshadowing Nobody has used. The first time I reread the story I thought the cat staring at the river was just an example the empathy that the ready was unaware of. Now he has shoved two plot points into it.

I think this might come into play again later, but it might also just be a red herring.

Good point about Nochka!Kitten at the river and the timing. I think you're (whoever you were) right about it being too early in the loop to match her parents having been killed late. IIRC Zorian was on his way to meet Taiven in the park about going into the Dungeons when he encountered her. So unless her parents were killed early on in earlier loops, something doesn't match up. But the profound sadness Zorian felt seems too ... profound to be simply about a lost bike.

I did not have the impression that Kyron knew about the loop. I have the impression that's a dangerous, suspicious man who just asked Zorian a question and got an answer he didn't like from an uppity 15 year old who knows things he shouldn't.

When you're a child, the smallest loss can be a terrible tragedy. Losing your bike can be like losing your entire world.

And note that Zorian runs into the girl while dodging a cranium rat swarm. They're monitoring Nochka perhaps, so the cult always seem interested in her right from the first loop.

Actually, reading through the end of the chapter again, I've changed my mind. Zorian definitely admitted to using mind magic in the battle there.

    Update.

As always, his interactions with his sister and his classmates are my favourite aspects of this story, really liking the new characters.

Also, we finally got some information on his eldest brother.
