Well, I'll be damned. I'm kinda proud. I've been super dicking around in legend playing an odd mech rogue. I take vindictive pleasure in try harding when I get matched up with those rank 1/2 hunters, though.

Something like this? It's the Mech rogue I've been using. Lost 4 games total from rank 17 to 4.

Right, so I'm after a bit of advice.

I've never really played ranked, but I'd like to start. Back when Hearthstone first came out, I played quite a bit and have every non expansion card. (barring a few legendaries of course) These days I've just been playing arena.

So yeah, what's a good (relatively) cheap deck to make? I'd be ok with spending a little bit of money buying card packs, but not too much. At this stage, I think I'd just want to make one good competitive deck that fits the current meta and play that for a while.

So what are my best options here?

Edit: I should say that Paladin, Mage and Shaman are my preferred classes.

Secrets Paladin possibly? Either aggro or mid-range versions. Aggro seems better to climb, but midrange better at the highest ranks.

Mech mage and Mech shaman are playable (though realistically shaman isn't amazing)

http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/279571-legend-aggro-secret-paladin - something like this for secret pally, it's not quite what I run/would run, but it seems playable.

Your best option is Face Hunter. You can climb the ladder quickly, it's been a legend-reachable deck since release and probably always will be, and it's cheap.

While this is true, the downside is that you have to play Face Hunter.

There are a lot of good decks out there. Secrets Paladin is surprisingly fun, but needs Mysterious Challenger to really work. Mech Mage and Freeze Mage are still strong decks (though Mech would be tough without GvG cards). I quite enjoy Malygos Shaman, but it can be inconsistent at higher ranks.

If you're willing to try out other classes, there are a few decks that use classic cards almost exclusively. Control Warrior and Handlock come to mind, and they've been strong basically since the game launched. They've been updated with newer cards, but the old versions still work reasonably well.

Eboladin is fun, I enjoy it more then my mech mage or face hunter past decks.

Druid is fun if you like playing combos and don't want to play Patron. Patron is actually a really cheap (costwise) deck, so if you don't have a lot of dust its worth looking in to.

Hand Lock and Control Warrior are super fucking expensive. Malygos Lock and Demonlock are both also expensive, and I'm pretty sure both are variations of Handlock (I THINK Malygos lock is, but Demonlock definitely is). Aggro Lock is pretty cheap though, and is pretty much face hunter with card draw.

I think the main concern for me with Malylock was actually getting Malygos himself, the rest didn't take to long time to get.

Demon Zoo is really cheap outside of Mal'ganis himself.

You can run Gormok as well in it, but otherwise he's the only legendary. (I find Boom to be a little too slow, and there's just not enough space for him in deck)

Decided to run with this secret paladin. Only cost me around... 1000 dust? I've got a golden Hogger and Lorewalker Cho that I can disenchant later on too.

Cheers for the responses guys. Though I should say that I'm more looking to learn hearthstone properly than climb to legend. I don't know if I'll ever grind this game.

Like, for example I still don't know what Tempo/Control/Aggro etc really mean. Though aggro is pretty self explanatory.

I've disenchanted 2 golden legendaries and only kind of regret it.

(Onyxia and Greenskin, and I had just started out and had no Boom, Sylv, etc)

I've only ever gotten 2 golden legendaries and I play since beta, though I will never disenchant them. Golden Grom and Ysera way too shiny.

For people who are higher rank, is Oil Rogue doable without two prep?

I ran it pretty regularly up to 15 then hit a wall where I couldn't get minions out post turn four. Anything that I throw on the board after gets eaten by removal, and by then I've burned most of my cheap anti-aggro (backstab, SI:7, etc).

Should probably also add that I don't have the cash/ dust to invest in the game financially. Had to take the FTP route thus far.

No. Traditional oil rogue needs preps.

Mech rogue and Aggro can get by without using them though.

I played this around rank 4-6 last season: http://imgur.com/ftBbfjg

Replace Leeroy with another Assassins Blade, or a single prep or something if you have it. It's not mandantory, and I'm not sure I ever actually got use out of him.

Yeah. The more I played the more I realized how integral they seem to be for everything from the titular combo to being able to maintain board. Thanks for the clarification!

    Mine looks like this. [IMG]

It's my own list, but it has >50% win rate in legend so that's something. I can explain anycard choices if people are curious.

What's the reasoning with Skulker? It doesn't seem to fit the aggressive feel of the deck.

I think that the point of skulker is dealing with other aggressive decks

Basically, this. The deck is more tempo oriented than aggro. It helps in the paladin/hunter/mage matchups. It can be be used to get minions in range for favorable trades - It's like a holy nova plus a body.
