    Has Odran's fic been recommended?

Odran as a SI, it is actually looking up to be decent. Sitting here hoping he will be forced to marry a Targ, the rage would be glorious.

I don't really like it, mostly because the changes to the timeline seem to be a quick easy way to nerf the SI instead of integrating them through the story as it goes as the result of his changes.

Nah, didn't feel like it amounted to much and didn't think it would appeal to many outside of the ones who lurk and chat in the ADOTN rolz room, where most of this was first conceived.

Truly, a fate worse than being born a Frey.

That's because the changes seem very superficial so far. They're just distant stuff, people I haven't even met or interacted with. But yeah, I freely admit, I did a lot of dice rolls to alter the setting to make it more interesting for me and for the folks who read the fic.

Canon rehash would have been just plain unappealing for me to go through and write about.

A SI in Westeros for longer than two weeks and no steam machine invention or new irrigation techniques or gunpowder or penicillin?

    For shame, Odran. For shame.

And the fact that the SI did not tear out Lyanna's throat with his teeth upon first meeting her, has me convinced this is not Odran, but an imposter.

Seriously though, quite like it so far. The Lady Arryn subplot is really interesting and I am liking all the divergences, and the impact all of that will have on canon events.

If I only had access to some highland cattle, just imagine...

    The jig is up!

Mhm, gotta insert the occasional chapter like that to just give a wider perspective on things that's not solely from my POV. Helps in keeping things fresh.

Been about a month since there was a recommendation.

The Duel - it's only 2 chapters so far, but it's listed to be a 5 chapter story so technically it's nearly halfway done. In short; Ser Rodrick allows Robb and Joff to use live steal in their spar and awful things happen.

It is fun but with only five planned chapters how much can really happen? The events of chapter one are such a massive divergence that at the current pace the story will be over before everyone is even aware something happened. I am following it though.

I sort of enjoyed Duel. First chapter was meh, but the second was very good. The Ned parts, mostly.

The premise is very interesting, although it's still too short to judge. At least it's something new. The fandom is super dead.

Good so far. Nice to see something a bit different than the usual divergence.

I haven’t found any good ASOIAF fic recently, except Black Storm ( Brandon and Stannis friendship fic, interesting premise and Brandon is pretty good, writing is meh though.) and a Robert/Elia fic that is a 4/5 except for the last chapter, which sucked. Fandom is mostly alive though Quests now I think, lots of ASOIAF Quests, some quite great.

(AU) Subtle changes make for great consequences. In the uneasy weeks between King Robert Baratheon's death and the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings, his brother, Lord Stannis Baratheon, must work to pull together an uneasy alliance to overthrow the usurper sitting the Iron Throne. If he succeeds, his reign will be difficult. If he fails, the realm will fall apart.

This is a decently written fic so far. Not much of it yet, just four chapters, but something to keep an eye on. Seems to be setting up a Stannis/Northern alliance.

Also 'The Duel' updated recently, the fic that had Joffrey stab Robb in the back during a practice duel with real swords.

    Couple of new stories on Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocities I think are worth checking out;

Hear me roar the premise is that the Westerlands, the realm of House Lannister, from A Song of Ice and Fire is teleported magically to the western part of Gondor. The Westerlands are from just after the War of the Five Kings and all of the Westermen have been teleported back for the "big trip" as it were. Middle Earth is currently in T.A. 3017 which is about a year before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.

    and

Oh God, am I the Mannis now? A self-insert ends up in the body of a young Stannis Baratheon during the siege of Storms End.

Both are fairly short right now but they're promising.

The second fic, the Stannis SI, is rather awfully written.

I get that with self-inserts there comes a measure of personal touch being added to the tone of the story, but the way this particular author wrote is just plain jarring. I don't feel like I'm reading about ASOIAF. Too many changes are imposed for the sake of the SI being accommodated (mentally), like how he insists every man call him by his first name, as if they were chums. That's just the kind of social faux pas you can't go with in Westeros.

And then there's the dreaded "I must innovate/modernize/implement my knowledge of the modern world!" that I've noticed is all far too common in self-insert fanfics that happen in the ASOIAF setting. It's... dull, to put it plainly.

Sir Rabby, the author, tends to start off with an interesting idea and then drive it into the ground. He did an archive Taylor and a Dresden SI that both slowly went off the rails. That said, what he produces is novel and technically unobjectionable, two things which go a long way for me. His SIs are also paranoid as a rule, something that amuses me when so many just blithely go along.

I've enjoyed what I've read of the Stannis SI so far but it's clearly a pretty average fic that could do with some work and some better thought into the plot direction. Similarly to Odran I hate it when fics go down the route of advancing technology - I want my protagonists to have power and advance the plot but I generally see these types of developments simply being a weird sort of Great Man theory and ultimately utterly uninteresting.

Speaking of self-inserts, will you ever update your fic Odran?
