When authors make Harry a midget or super tall.

He is about the same height as his father, who was considered "tall". So an adult Harry should be around 5'10-6'0.

Why do authors make him 5'1 or 6'5? He's either a Hobbit or a wannabe wrestler.

The movies have to be a big part of that what with Daniel Radcliffe being 5'5 and all. Not to mention he's described as being 'small for his age' in the early books and that likely sticks in the mind longer than the small mentions of him getting tall late in the series.

What stories have him as a giant? The only one I can think of that explicitly has him over six foot is Rise of the Wizards.

Really awful stories where Harry gets the goblins to use the super speshul goblin magic to repair all the damage the Dursleys did.

Yeah, well everyone is shorter in the movies than in the books, so I'm not sure what that has to do with it.

And being short at 11 really isn't that big of a deal. I was 5'3 at that age and only grew up to be 5'10. But I've known plenty of guys who weren't even 5 feet tall at that age who grew up to be over 6 feet tall.

Yeah, I went to school with a guy who quite literally looked like he was a baby-faced elementary school kid, a ten-year-old at best in build and general complexion, right up until the day he graduated high school.

I saw him at a party two or three years later and he was over six feet tall.

Growing that much, that fast, must have been a bitch -and having spent all all of middle and high school as a shrimp, with all those judgmental douchebags, may have made it seem a tad like 'too little too late'- but I imagine he felt the discomfort was worth the results, in the end.

It's not like being small hurt him, socially, he was always one of the popular kids (although, admittedly, this was in part because the girls thought he was cute, just not the kind of cute a teen guy wants to be): He was smart-mouthed and ballsy most of the time, and probably figured he had to act that way right out of the gate, to make up for his appearance, or else the other students would make school unbearable.

When people use the original author's name as a replacement for God. I see it most commonly in MLP with "Oh, Faust", but I've seen Kishimoto and Oum among others as well.

True enough. I knew this one kid who was 5 feet tall at 14 years old. I saw him 3 years later and he was 6 foot 4.

Everyone thought I was going to be super tall because I was 5'10 at 14, but I never grew past that.

Oh, for the love of Rowling...

    EDIT: Nope, doesn't sound right.

Maybe if you shortened it to "Jo." Or something closer to a more well-known word, like "JoKR."

Words cannot describe how much I hate it when Harry Potter gains "shoulder length" hair.

Seriously -- what idiot thinks giving him that is a good idea? That would be like giving Hermione perfectly straight hair, or making Millicent Bulstrode skinny.

Didn't Hermione straighten her hair for the ball in GoF?

That was a one time deal and even then it was a stupid case of Rowling doing the ugly duckling dance.

Eh I never minded Hermione's magic transformation, considering what the right makeup makeup and a good dress can do to someones appearance in this world. Cosmetic magic must be able to work wonders, especially to someone as good at subtle magic as Hermione. Just because shes not vein enough to do it to herself every day doesn't mean she can't.

It would make a funny scene where the Gryffindor girls are trying out dodgy cosmetic spells out of Magic Cosmo on themselves and end up having to go to the hospital wing with permanent trout pout.

She didn't necessarily straighten it. All we really know about the stuff is that Sleekeazy "tames" hair. She probably just used it to make it less frizzy and more manageable. While the movies can't be taken as canon (they couldn't even get the color of her Yule Ball dress right), you'll note her hair isn't straight, it's sort of swept back, with a few strategic spiral curls escaping from it.

Think of it as a VO5 hot oil treatment for lazy, fumble-fingered, shits who have to use magic for things the rest of us do the muggle way. :D

In other words, she went from this to this (not this).

I think the highest I could accept Harry being is 6 feet 2 inches and, even then, only if the author makes it clear that it's not Harry's natural height, and Harry needs to go through a painful ritual for it to happen.

And the result not being immediate, either.

I frankly don't care about height, hair or whatever. Spending time on it is almost always wasted and signs of a bad fic regardless of which direction it went in.

If it's overdone, yes. But the writer should give the readers an idea of what the characters look like.
