I don't think they even do anything for a story. Usually I won't even read the fic if I see one.
Pet peeve for me Hermione paired with James Sirius or Remus. Even if it's a time travel.

Actually I did mean "James Sirius" and I once saw a Harry/Victoire where Bill and Fleur fully supported the relationship.

The only thing that I would complain is the slow progression, the excelent worldbuilding and characterizations are the strong points but they also made the fic very wordy so I don't see it reaching Shippuden. It's a frequent problem with Part 1 fics, they take too long to go through all the events and when they are close to Part 2 the author stops writing it, loses the interest and all that.

Still very much worth the reading though.

 

Whether its hand to hand or using swords (fucking swords), I genuinely don't understand why authors try to force something so mundane into their stories. Is it just that they are trying to steer things onto slightly more familiar ground? Or is it that they've seen films where the backflipping unarmed ninja takes out half a dozen heavily armed spec op soldiers, and thing the same 'logic' applies to wizards, because they default to the equation magic = gun?

 

Seems like I'm alone in liking swords. They should never supersede magic, of course, but I've got nothing against using one as long as it's not a magical katana. Besides, the whole sword thing was introduced in CoS. Harry used it once to great effect, why not do so again?
