Yeah, double-barrel names aren't too uncommon around here. Not amongst the upper-middle class and upper class, of course.

I went to a all-girls' grammar school and people with double-barrelled surnames were often the ones who owned two ponies and a swimming pool or something.

What kills me with the double-barrel names is that people treat it like it was canon for the Harry Potter characters to have names like that.

I had a friend who took up a second name, because his grandfather had noone to inherit the name, so he did. Otherwise it's fairly uncommon around here too.

What about Justin Finch-Fletchley, Sally-Ann Perks, or Professor Grubbly-Plank? I think there's probably a population equivalent to that of muggle Britain.

Stories that break the fourth wall for comedic purposes. It's part of this "lulz, I'm so random" style of comedy that's resulted from characters like Deadpool - which people use in lieu of actual humor.

For example: I was reading a story the other day where a character suddenly, in the middle of the conversation, explained a specific plot hole away by saying, "The author couldn't think of anything better." Which was soon followed by the third person narration stating the opposite (this also falls into my pet peeve of a third person narrator that's too conversational).

To be clear, this wasn't a humor or parody story.

And this shit pops up in fanfiction all the time. It's ridiculous. They think this kind of stuff is meta or something. That they're deconstructing the concept of fiction.

They're not. It's been done before, and it's never funny or insightful. Humor should derive from the story itself - not from the author suddenly halting the story so they can crack a joke. It's lazy writing, that requires no actual thought put into it.

That's so wrong, that is so wrong. Not just the action itself but those specific words, holy shit no.

"Dr." he said, "there's something wrong with me."

No, no, no. Don't write like that you moron. If you're calling someone by their title spell it out. It looks like utter shit when you write like that.

Is the only correct time to use Mr./Dr. etc if describing a label literally or something? Eg, On his desk it said 'Dr. John Doe'.

Mr Smith, Ms Smith, Mrs Smith are acceptable, as is Dr Smith.

    Writing:

    or

    Is not correct.

Is anyone else bothered by the "Incompetent Wizarding World" thing? Though I will admit that I haven't been reading as long as most people here, I've come across a lot of stories where the Wizarding World is portrayed as backwards and lesser than the normal world. I think that because the Wizarding World is so small, they would be forced to get along. They probably wouldn't have the same issues we have with the exception to the blood purity ideology. Magical creatures, Muggles, and Squibs are where prejudices lie. There are so many famous and well-respected women in the books that I don't think Misogyny would be a thing, and they wouldn't even have the time for racism. Since Dumbledore is apparently gay and nobody expressed anything about it in the series, it is arguable that homophobia isn't a thing either.

While the average Wizard may be clueless when it comes to Muggles, I think that those who need to know (Wizards whose job is to be sure Muggles don't learn about them, for example) will do the research. Kind of like how every average person knows about computers and the internet but very little about how they actually work. Mr. Weasley doesn't count because he just find Muggles cool and works with making sure Muggle objects aren't tampered with. Basically, he's self-taught and doesn't have a super important job that requires such knowledge.

We also know that there are innovators in the Wizarding World (Fred and George's creations and Snape with Sectumsempra) so it's not like they're stagnant and not inventing anything. Also, the Department of Mysteries showed that there are people actively studying and experimenting with things.

It irritates me when I see this because it seems lazy. There's lots of complaining about what the Wizarding World doesn't have and making it seem like Wizards have no chance against Muggles because Wizards are apparently completely oblivious to technology and wouldn't know how to defend against it. How on earth would Wizards be so incompetent that they don't keep up with the technological advancements of Muggles- you know, the historically violent group that they're hiding from. You'd think they'd work at making spells to counter things like guns and video cameras. Especially after the world wars. There's no way Wizards weren't at least aware of the carpet bombings, let alone the nuclear bombs in Japan. I'm not saying spell creation would be easy, just something a logical society would at least try. Perhaps instead of the complaining, people could be creative and expand upon it?

Confusing sex of characters. Some female authors identify with their main male character(poor Harry) so much I start to doubt if they are really male or just Mary Sue in disguise. Bad slash, it is(but not only).

Or making someone cold and unforgiving only to go all soft-hearted, clingy and tearful. Downright disturbing and disenabling to read. It could also be split personality, but only in one fic it really was.

No new decent fics to read. I'm stuck at Rent a Hero, Taking Umbridge, and Havoc side of the Force these are all fics that have been around a bit. I wish a new good fic would pop up.

Also fics where Harry starts to tolerate Lucius Malfoy. Seeing as the guy helped open the chamber of secrets in book 2 and nearly gave Harry up in book 7. I cannot see Harry and Malfoy becoming allies in any respect after the war.

Just started trying to read some Star Wars fics and not only are nearly all of them terrible but they have something far more terrible than magical cores etc.

Some fucking retarded Training/Padawan Bond in which the masters and apprentice can read each other thoughts and speak with eachother. Were did that shit come from? It sure as hell wasn't in the movies.

It's canon. Only got a few passing mentions in the Clone Wars though. It was expanded upon in the EU.

It's quite prominent in the old EU, but it's not supposed to be used as an alternative to comlinks. It's a training tool (guiding tool) so the padawan can know how it feels using the Force in certain ways, for the master to keep track of his padawan's emotions, etc.

Telepathy is canon as of Empire Strikes Back. (Luke and Leia) Though it's also for the more powerful Jedi supposedly.

However, ff interpretation, as always, abuses it absurdly. Like if Portkeys are a thing in HP then why not "Emergency Portkeys!!!!!" If Patronus' are a thing then why not "Golden Patronus!!!!!!!"

    Same thing.

About Gringotts keeping money inside the bank in the middle of London for tousands of years. Yes money lending is an old and Dangerous proffession but the idea banks as we know it around the 16th century and I doubt goblin immedietly jumped on the bandwagon, thinking how great the idea it was.
