Harry using the Fidelius to conceal the fact that he has a harem. It's not like the Fidelius needs to be even more broken than it already is.

Never encountered this, and I'm not sure how I'd proceed with a story that threw such a development at me, but I admit to being sufficiently amused by the idea.

What? How does that work exactly. The Fidelius hides a location, I can't imagine how it could protect something like that. I mean how does that get found out? You tell people or people catch you fucking 8 women, well I mean the first is easily solved and also not prevented by the Fidelius if you're Harry who I assume is the keeper and the second would be like inviting someone into a Fidelius protected space.

    What.

    From the Pottermore wiki:

Since it says "concealment of information", the author took this to mean that it was possible to conceal the fact that Harry was in a Harry/Harem relationship using a Fidelius charm. I found this simultaneously annoying and hilarious. Allowing the Fidelius to conceal information is just ridiculously broken.

I'll have to hunt down the exact fanfic this was now. I only remembered it because I was discussing the Fidelius charm somewhere else.

It's not broken, it's canon. Even if you don't consider Pottermore as such, it has been canon since PoA. The Fidelius didn't hide the house in Godric's Hollow, it hid the fact (information) that the Potters lived there. Flitwick says "Voldemort could have looked through the window of their living-room and would still have been unable to know where they lived" or something like that.

Now that doesn't mean using it to hide a harem isn't monumentally stupid, but maybe that's because you're reading a harem fic and most of them are stupid by nature. I mean, I guess it is to prevent Evil!Dumbles from finding it in the Gringotts/Ministry files because the Goblins are less helpful/competent than usual? Because apart from that and fucking several girls at the same time in public, this cannot exactly be discovered without telling someone.

As to what would happen if someone saw him fucking all his harem at the same time, we don't know since the exact mechanics of the Fidelius are never really explained. Maybe the person would instantly forget it, maybe he would only be able to see one girl at a time, or maybe his brain would fry.

TL;DR: Even though the Fidelius is only used in canon to hide places, nothing prevents it from hiding anything else. Using it for a harem is still completely dumb.

The part about using it for a harem is why I posted this in the pet peeves thread. Yes, it's very stupid.

I realize that the description I gave is canon, but I used the term "broken" because that interpretation, followed to its logical conclusion, makes all sorts of ridiculous things possible. For example, see https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9901496/1/Honestly-Harry

Even if one were to take it to less of an extreme, why didn't Voldemort hide the existence of the Dark Mark under a Fidelius, or the membership of the Death Eaters?

Imagine how the trial of Lucius Malfoy would go if the facts "Lucius Malfoy is a Death Eater", "Malfoy has performed unforgivable curses", "Malfoy has committed crimes X, Y, and Z" were all facts hidden under the Fidelius?

I once read a fic where Harry used a Fidelius to hide his identity and existence. As in everyone forgot who Harry Potter is. Everyone spent the next decade or so trying to figure out who the hell The-Boy-Who-Lived is. It lasted until the unknowing Muggle secret-keeper died in a car accident, after which everyone knew who he was.

I'm still trying to figure out if that fic was a mildly entertaining comedy or a generically bad fic.

    You made my day... :D
Well, I once encountered story where Tom Riddle used fidelius to prevent anyone from recognizing his face - people were supposed to forget how Tom Riddle's face looked. No one would associate his new persona with old name.
I was thinking about it recently. I suppose dark mark was to constrain Death Eaters from quiting ranks without consequences. With mark no one would help them and only arrest, so they have no choice after joining than remain.

I'm pretty sure the worst consequence of quitting the ranks of the Death Eaters was that they would hunt you down and kill you. Voldemort was definitely not a fan of deserters.

Regarding the Fidelius charm, it would make a lot more sense if the difficulty and complexity of the Fidelius were directly linked to the degree to which the information is known. That would cut down on a lot of silliness, such as putting "the sky is blue" under Fidelius, but preserving its use by powerful or skilled practitioners to conceal less obvious facts.

The thing is you are hunted by Death Eaters and Ministry. Without mark you could mingle with the crowd, but with it's obvious you are deserted DE or overall DE(MM wouldn't know). And pain during every summoning surely isn't fun.
Consequence is the same, but chances of success are definitly lower.

The most obvious reason Voldemort didn't cast the spell on the Dark Mark (besides from not giving a shit about his supporters) is that he couldn't. There's no indication that he knows enough about the spell to cast it, and I believe PoA discusses how obscure/old the spell is. The idea that it is common knowledge is very much a fanon construction.

Every time you read a Slytherin!Harry fic, and he decides how much he loves potions. Normally followed by a line about how potions are basically just cooking.

I hate seeing a manipulative!Dumbledore and then he loses controle and has no backup plans. Like Harry becoming independent and Dumbledore never thinking the need to plan for that. Then a few chapters in a manipulative!Dumbledore turns into a incompetent Dumbledore.

"[Character] will take the world by storm!"

This never fails to disgruntle me in a summary.

This is up there with the most garbage idea of a summary.

Dark Lords HATE him, find out how!

On the subject of summaries though, writers that try to force the fics title into the summary because they think it's clever, then fail miserably.

Similarly, summaries with "but will he succeed?!"

    Spoilers: yes. Yes he will.
