The spell used to conjure Wormtail's hand is not mentioned, just described. Here's the passage from the Goblet of Fire:

The passage shows that the hand is silver, and that it had superior strength to a normal hand (as it was able to crush a twig into powder). We also learn from the DH that the silver hand is impervious to some magic, seeing that Ron's Revulsion jinx did not stop the hand from choking Pettigrew to death.

What, in canon, are the wand cores we know of that Ollivander doesn't use? I know veela hair is one, since Fleur DeLacour has that, but beyond that one all I can remember is overlapping fanfiction cores of basilisk venom and dementor cloak and all the other ones I've read. Trying to keep a story grounded in canon as much as possible but I still want a unique core for a character.

The only thing I can think of otomh is that the Elder Wand is said to be made out of Thestral Hair.

Ollivander uses dragon heartstring, unicorn hair, and phoenix feather. He doesn't like veela hair because of its temperament or thestral hair because it is so easily won from its master. Here's a decent resource.

From here. Wand cores mentioned in PotterMore included. Link includes attributes and known owners, etc.

Seriously, Thunderbird tail? WTF? That's just bad fanfiction. Not to mention Troll whisker... o_O"

Well ... yes. It's the HP wiki. What did you expect? If you're lucky, the core is from a Lego Harry Potter video game. If you're unlucky, someone made it up.

TL;DR: The HP wiki is no source to answer Canon questions.

Edit: So it is from Pottermore. The point remains, though.

Thunderbird tail, Wampus cat hair, White River Monster spine, and Rougarou hair are all from Pottermore (so take that as you will), and they are American spell cores, made from magical creatures common in America. I believe the rest are, with the exception of Threstral Hair (obvi Elder Wand), substandard cores that Ollivander talks about in the Pottermore section on wand cores.

So yeah, it's technically canon, but how much you're willing to accept the resource that gave us Fleamont and Euphemia Potter is up to you.

Don't know if this is the correct topic for this question, but are there any good time travel fics where Harry raises his younger self? I know I read a few a while ago that weren't that bad.

When you place a memory in the pencieve do you still remember it yourself it is it removed from you?

The way Dumbledore said it, it seemed as if it helps clear your mind by removing them.

If you remove the memory, can you remember that you no longer have it? How can you know about something you can't remember?

No, "extracting" a memory does not seem to make someone lose that memory completely. For example, Snape clearly remembers his worst memory of calling Lily a mudblood, even though it had been "extracted" from his mind already. Dumbledore also remembers his memories of Tom Riddle during his private lessons with Harry in HBP.

When Dumbledore said it helped clear his mind, he meant that it helps him with observation.

At the same time, it must have some effect, or there is no reason for Snape to use the pensieve to remove the memories before the lessons in the first place. (Presumably so that Harry doesn't encounter them, if he manages to reverse the link -- as he actually did.)

How it works is guesswork, as it's never explained. Possibly it actually does remove that one thought, but of course you have lots of other thoughts linked to it, so while that particular one is gone, your knowledge of it can't be removed.

My question is relatively simple. Why does splinching happen?

We know that splinching can mostly be remedied, and can range from eyebrows being left behind to whole centimeters of flesh being taken off but I don't think Rowlings explained as to why it happens. What are the possible causes, or is it completely random in your opinion?

As far as I can tell, there's no answer to that question in the canon. Any answer to that question would be completely based on speculation, which isn't allowed on this thread. You might be better off making a new thread about it.

    Twycross explains it like this:

Intuitively, you'd guess it's got to do with concentration, but perhaps that is covered by Twycross' "Determination". That entire scene serves as comic relief, anyway, so you have to be careful when extracting facts here.

MoltenCheese. Yeah, I thought that too...
Sesc. I think concentration is the better answer. Ron splinched himself whilst escaping Grimmauld Place, right? I may be wrong since I haven't read that part in years, but wouldn't he be determined enough?
