Arc 1 of Resonance is officially at an end, two months behind schedule. Still I made it. That's what counts right?

I read a couple new Worm fics.

That Gnawing Worm, Cancer by Nugar.

It’s about an altpower!Taylor with cancer that teams up with a non-Undersiders Lisa to cause havoc. Surprisingly light and fun. The world is fairly AU with a lot of major players either already dead or doing something else.

    Hobgoblin by Neptune1.

Nilbog is the protagonist and just when it looks like it’ll be a simple alt-POV of the canon Worm, Nilbog decides to leave Ellisburg and go someplace else (no guesses where). A lot of coincidences in this fic like Nilbog running into important people. The characterization of certain canon characters doesn’t read right, like accepting a terrifying situation too readily. However, it’s decent enough and a good time waster.

Yeah, I've been following That Gnawing Worm, it's really good. When it's got some length to it, I think it deserves a spot on the review board.

Thanks for linking this mate, it's hilarious so far. The banter is genius. Review threat would be appropriate.

The Gnawing Worm was quite really nice. Different.

Taylor's got this fun, lighthearted narrative which is paradoxically absolutely heartbreaking when you realize this is the only way a girl with no friends has been able to deal with the knowledge of her imminent death from cancer. Her friendship with Tattletale is just so heartwarming to read.

Love how she keeps thinking that this is all one big recruitment drive, and keeps thinking "Well, sign me up!"

It does a good job of making the actual plot interesting and thrilling enough, while keeping far away from big city changing gang wars and all the usual Worm stuff.

Two pretty solid worm stories just got going, Flea and After Sphere. Both are AUs where the normal game of cops and robbers is over and both seem to be going interesting places. They're too short to be put up for review, but I like what's there.

Flea looks like a very interesting start but obviously it'll all depend on where they take it as there's not much to go on. After Sphere has a sort of intriguing premise but is badly written.

Burn Up has been a fun read for what little there is. The last chapter did seem to push her powerset slightly beyond plausibility, but I'm a sucker for narrative from such a distorted perspective.

Just started, so there's much content yet, but I really like the direction it seems to be headed and it's about as original as this fandom gets these days.

Flea is pretty good and worth reading for the premise alone of a massive AU, which already makes it automatically superior to all the shitty canon rehashes. Writing is a bit choppy and it takes a bit of suspension of disbelief to get into, but having a fascinating idea more than makes up for its shortcomings. Whether its library worthy will depend on the author's ability to actually write a good narrative out of this and stop relying on his premise to do the heavy lifting though.

    Edit:

Just read Burn Up. It's YMMV. The writing is intentionally disjointed and the author pulls off "crazy" well. Some scenes were pretty funny, and it's left me curious where this is going.

Definitely liked Burn Up. Too early to rate of course, but I enjoy the crazy Taylor who just wants a good honest fight instead of all this useless flapping of lips.

I'm very confused at the recent normals vs Parahumans recently. I get that normals didn't do enough in canon and felt a little off, but now the opposite is true.

I already forgot what fic that I read that had Piggot be like super!Accord to make the plot make a lick of sense. It reminds me of that one horrible normals vs Bleach where the normals used a bloody nuke on Aizen.

Someone wrote one that was fun and well received and now everyone's doing it. SB is so insular that fads can rapidly sweep the site. I imagine in a month or two there'll be one good one, two mediocre ones and a bunch of terrible imitations. If they're to your taste enjoy them, if not wait for the next trend.

Was enjoying this but the latest update went full retard. the author says he failed to communicate what he meant in that update. It might kill the story for me.

Yeah... If it was an overreaction or him fucking up I could get behind it, but making that the official PRT policy? Doesn't really work for me.

I wanted to like After Sphere, and I think the story the author actually wanted to write about Space Skitter taking things over could have been pretty good. The problem is just that he didn't put anywhere close to enough thought in to how to make the setting actually work, and the attempts at fixing the problems just made it worse. It's the sort of thing where you just have to say "fuck you this is the setting" and move on without ever drawing the reader's attention to the backstory after the introduction.

Eh, that seems like it'd only be a good idea if the author is not motivated enough/skilled enough to write it out properly, and at that point you've resigned yourself to writing a story purely for cathartic purposes or guilty pleasure reading.

Which isn't necessarily bad, I suppose, if that's what the author wants.
