I didn't post the chapter update, I was only correcting a broken link.

Are there any fics in which Eddard leaves for Winterfell immediately after quitting as Hand and enters the War of Five Kings? The closest thing I've read is Ned Stark Lives, but I haven't seen any with that premise.

I figure I might as well ask here, since it's probably this thread where I saw it first, but does anyone know the name of that one fic where Renly died from starvation during the siege of Storm's End?

It will probably die after half a dozen more posts. It shows that the ASOIAF thread has become so full of nonsense that it is now overflowing.

    An interesting idea, but the author has an aversion to every form of punctuation except commas. Here's an example;

Not sure if this was already posted or not, but I thought I'd give it a try.

I really dislike Theon Greyjoy (because reasons) but I love his character (G.R.R. M is an amazing writer and makes me love even his most hateful personas that he brings to life). Anyways, I lost my train of thought, but check out Odd Bird and tell me what you think. Theon time travels.

Search DLP for the story ID number (first number from the url you linked). The same method works for ff.net fics.

You should be telling us what you think about it.

Has anyone been reading this? In my opinion it's easily the best Robb survives the Red Wedding fic out there. It's called The Luck of Fools. The first few chapters were published three years ago before it went on hiatus, but it has recently started updating regularly again. Four or five new chapters now in the last couple of months.

The writing is technically very good and the battle scenes might well be the best I've seen in the fandom. In the most recent chapters we're really starting to see the butterflies from Robb's survival impacting events.

    I highly recommend.

Does he still intend to make that happen?

    Edit:

I've read all of it and I can't say I'm liking where this is going.

Robb finds out about the Westerling plot and he stays married to Jeyne? Seems rather stupid.

Also, given that Robb has survived, how the fuck would the "Sansan" thing ever be allowed to happen?

And now there's a random lord who owns a book called "A Song of Ice and Fire", whose copies Rhaegar once owned too and that apparently talks about the coming of the Others and the second Long Night and all that.

I don't know if the author still intends to go through with the Sansan. I'm admittedly not thrilled with the idea myself, but if it does happen it probably won't be for a long while and hopefully won't be given too much focus. The story seems pretty heavily plot focused, so I doubt there's too much risk of it suddenly turning into some crappy romance.

As for Robb staying married to Jeyne, given his character can you honestly see him setting her aside for the crimes of her family? I can't. It's made painfully clear in canon that Robb is more concerned with doing what he sees as honorable than what is intelligent. Jeyne had no part in her family's treason so Robb wouldn't punish her for it.

The book is a little convenient, I'll grant you, but there are far worse literary crimes than a relatively minor plot point being slightly contrived.

I doubt it won't be given much focus, given that Sandor Clegane is stated to be one of the POVs in the summary and in that very same summary Sansan is brought up.

As for Robb's character, true, I'll grant that his character falls in line with that kind of behavior. Somewhat.

But sticking with it after the fiasco at Twins? It doesn't make any sense. It doesn't matter that Jeyne's brother defended Grey Wind, she and whatever offspring she produces will be looked upon as the children of traitors. Robb should be able to see what that kind of behavior has done for his cause. It's not doing him any favors that his mother has not (yet?) been punished for freeing the Kingslayer either.

Also, what about Roose Bolton becoming Batman? By that, I'm referring to him sneaking into the Twins at night with a few men, killing people and writing messages in blood on the walls, before jumping off a bridge into the river below so as to avoid capture.

I'll judge the Sansan when or if it ever actually happens, I guess.

I definitely agree that Robb has handled the whole Westerling situation terribly. Choosing to execute the mother but remain married to Jeyne is surely going to come back to haunt him later, both on a personal and a political level, but I don't see it as being out of character. It's very similar to the Karstark situation, where Robb knows what the smart move would be, but chooses not to go that route because it's not honorable. I see your point that he should have learned his lesson by now precisely because of where those exact decisions led him, but I can also buy the interpretation that he feels he needs to stay the course as it were, as inadvisable as that is.

I admit I hadn't really thought too much on the Bolton thing, but now that you mention it, him jumping into the river too escape is a little hard to believe. The general success of the attack on the Twins is plausible enough, due to all the guards apparently being drunk off their asses (As admittedly stupid as it was for Robb to allow that), but the river thing... Yeah, that's strange.

I haven't read the story but this is hilarious. It also makes me want to read a Batman in Westeros story. Bruce Reyne, returning from Essos and his training with the Faceless Men, looking to avenge his family using their fortune and bring JUSTICE to Westeros. Somehow he ends up with Oswell Whent's bat helmet too.

Wasn't there a story with House Wayne? Could have sworn there was something like that.

I didn't even make it that far. Too confused trying to figure out Sandor's "crimes" in chapter 2.

Okay, so this is a bit different to the types of ASOIAF fics that are usually posted here but I think it's worth a read.

    Title: Sliding Doors
    Author: Joanna Jacobs
    Rating: M
    Genre: Romance/Drama
    Status: Complete
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Summary: It seems that being married to King Robert Baratheon drove women to the same bitterness -and into the arms of the same man. AU after the Rebellion where Robert marries his cousin, Helaena Estermont, instead of Cersei.
    Words: 104,952
    Link: fanfiction.net

So, yeah, main character is an OC cousin of the Baratheons who marries Robert instead of Cersei, who marries Stannis instead. It's a pure character piece, the Game of Thrones and the Song of Ice and Fire play no real part at all, as most fics though and it is entirely without any battle-scenes or wars.

It's all about Helaena's journey as Robert's wife, her life at court, her coming to terms with her miserable position there, as Robert is behaving the same as in canon, finding happiness and distraction in whores and wine.

Helaena is a compelling character, one feels for her and her relative powerlessness and loneliness at court, and when the situation improves, through both her and and later Robert's efforts, it does feel earned.

I know it seems like a stupid romantic triangle from the premise but it really is not. What she and Jaime have is very different than what she and Robert have and it is understandable from start to finish.

If I have one criticism one of the story, is that the ending is too abrupt, I would have liked an arc between chapters 19 and chapter 20. The time skip and handwaving there were a bit jarring and the ending does seem a bit idyllic. Especially since the Dany situation wasn't really resolved but then again, as I said, the Game of Thrones or the Song of Ice and Fire don't really appear in the story, so no scheming Greyjoys, Illyrio and so on. Then again, the whole Joeffrey and incest children thing never happened, so the status quo never got to deteriorate like in canon.

It's an interesting story, maybe not full of surprised and a bit predictable but still, compelling and enjoyable with a good main character.

It's not for everyone, it is a romance story at heart, after all, don't think Odran will like it for example, but still, worth a try.

How does this romance even come about?

I don't give a shit about this OC, because she'll be written whatever way the author wants to push the narrative/pairing about, but what the fuck was going on in Jaime's head?

    Edit:

    That fucking ending.

    That stupid and horrible ending.

Do they honestly think there would be no questions asked? Ever? By anyone?

You may call this a character piece, but whatever it is, it's simply awful.

There is no romance to be had here. Merely delusion and contrivances simply to push out the pairing to the fore.
