To be fair if it's a problem that the author doesn't brush off it could be used well. In ATLA Aang goes through this an it's perfectly legitimate because he's been raised to never kill an all so it a real dilemma for him. On the other hand Harrys raised in the muggle world and can a young teenager raised with morals -ish cope with being expected by adults to murder

My pet peeve is overall the age thing I can deal with kids being smarter then they are like hermione being a prodigy but when we get a kid fic and they're like 8-9 and talk like a baby and are being treated like one? It's so stupid, and I feel like questioning if they've ever talked to a kid. Also super smart harry lets be honest he isnt the smartest and those fics where he hides his intelligence by getting low grades.... First of all from canon I feel like they would've ignored his report cards or after the first one given treats to dudley and ignored them afterwards or if they had a negative reaction wouldnt this super smart kid forge the next one.

Harry is relatable because he isn't the smartest but he's got heart. If he had been a ravenclaw he'd be dead by 3rd year.

Welp, just read a fluffy fic I was enjoying until the author dragged in a betrothal. You might be able to justify that in Harry Potter but there is no way in Hell you could justify such a thing in a story set in modern day Paris.

Can we file this under author stupidity?

When it comes to culture, 70 to 80 years ago is not recent in any way, shape or form. It's also not practiced in modern day France except by some recent immigrants.

That doesn't excuse something being completely and utterly out of place.

Going back to previous entries about "The Summer"... Harry James Percival Gryfindor Ravenclaw ETC... it's so overly done and it gets on my nerves.

    My two cents.:colbert:

Just read one of my guilty please Naruto fics which recently updated and discocered another guilty pleasure.

When Naruto teaches the Rasengan or Hiraishin to some random person (Usually Koonohamoru though in this case it was Konohamoru, Moegi and Udon).

Like, dude. That is a jutsu that your father worked for for years. And you're just gonna hand it out to whoever?

It's bad enough in that one fic where Sakura learns it. Watching three snot nosed brats (Literally in Udon's case) learn it caused me to just press X on it straight away.

Naruto teaching Konohamaru the rasengan is canon though, and theoretically it's possible for any random Konoha shinobi to learn the hiraishen no jutsu. After all the fourth hokage learned it from a scroll.

Yeah, but mOegi and Udon is taking it a bit too far. And I hate some parts of Naruto Canon just like I hate Cursed Child in Harry Potter.

Is Cursed Child considered canon now even though JKR didn't write it? God, I hope not. I thought it was basically an approved fan fic play.

Apparently it is, given that it's the eighth story in the Harry Potter franchise. It's all very meh to me right about now. My interest in canonical Harry Potter business waned in Deathly Hallows and Cursed Child has killed it all. Frankly Cursed Child was just JKR satisfying the hordes of retarded asshats clamouring for this to happen.

Back on topic, my biggest pet peeve is a bit peculiar. Any form of slash that is sprung unexpectedly pisses me off. I mean, really? Why the hell would a perfectly heterosexual protagonist suddenly have homosexual urges? Damn if it ain't something that makes me rage.

Slash in general is something that always makes me leery, but when someone just does it with asinine reasoning just makes me think of that person as a jackass. When they do it with asinine reasoning and flip on you when their failings are pointed out, I feel like doing a Dr. Manhattan style of destruction. I swear there aren't enough words to describe the depths of my hatred for such folly.

Tangentially, this leads to my next pet peeve. Mpreg. When I see this I just go :fire.

Why? Just why? I'm no genius when it comes to anatomy, but anyone with half a brain cell ought to know that males CANNOT BE FUCKING IMPREGNATED!!! Worse still is the fact that some authors try to justify their idiocy by citing magic or chakra. Like :facepalm.

    Do not want.

I'm unaware of whether or not this has already been mentioned, but I had to get this off my chest.

This is hardly specific to fanfiction, but it really irks me when people use the word "mortified" to mean "horrified" instead of "embarrassed".

To be fair, it is listed as one of the synonyms.

It's not like it's a terrible assumption, in my opinion, given the root of mort.

Hm, listed but it feels like it sticks out a bit in that list as different, at least to me. With the possible exception of appal.

Maybe I'm just bad at English though.

    About a week late, but I'll respond with a . . . why?

One of the BIGGEST myths about teenagers is the "everyone's doing it" stupidity concerning sex. Outside of France, about 40-60 percent of high school seniors graduate a virgin (varies by country).* Pretty ironic a pet peeve of yours is one of the most realistic elements of a story. (But, "scheduling each base?" Haven't ever read it, but yeah, pretty stupid).

*Buried somewhere in these threads is a post of mine citing studies from the US and across Europe with those stats.

I was on cell phone, and still am, so I was probably lazy to write it out - or straight up forgot: when character is written as ready, and wanting, but then makes OOC decision to wait to do stuff (next base, whatever), to create artifical teenage relationship drama, angsting (note: I'm not talking about getting cold feet, or other normal parts of being a teen; that would create natural tension. I'm talking about obvious, immersion breaking artificial conflict.

Or, if not conflict, then to highlight some sort of 'level headness', or maturity in character, and you almost can feel the smugness of the author how mature the character is. Could be easily found in many of the H/Hr fics.

And, as for scheduling: i've seen it numerous times: "I won't do such and such until I'm precisely XX years old". I shit you not.

But then again, I'm fan of not-shipping, and I find teenage drama tedious (especially the hyper realistic kind that would go well together with the aforementioned statistics)

Sex was implied pretty heavily in the books as early as CoS when Harry and Ron catch Percy and Penelope leaving the same corridor while they're looking for the Slytherin dorms, not to mention in GoF where Fleur retreats to the garden with Roger Davies and Fred and George's tryst with the Veela cousins at the wedding.

Ahh, so your pet peeve is breaking inner-narrative logic to up the angst to 11?

    Yeah, I can see that.

Damn. I knew of such instances occurring but I was content to ignore them and remain in ignorance. Now you've ruined my ploy. I blame you for my unwanted knowledge of Mpreg in real life!!!

Stories that try to justify Voldemort's actions by pointing out that they occurred during a war. It's the stupidest argument ever - not only because of the evil shit Voldemort did before the war even started, but because he started the war himself.

It's even worse when Harry does it. I read one recently where Harry's logic was, and I'm paraphrasing, "He may have killed my parents, but they were different sides of the war, so it's okay!"

It doesn't help that this type of bullshit is often coupled with Dumbledore bashing.

Now that the Naruto series is over my greatest peeve in that fandom is when I come across a summery like this in a new fic:

Naruto is banished from the village in a way worse than imagined as Temari finds him on the verge of killing himself and helps him out of his despair as Konoha regrets ever letting him go. Chakra chains, Hiraishin and Space-time ninjutsu as well as seal master Naruto. Naruto x Temari. Konoha slight bashing.

And they don't even have the smarts to tag a fic like this "Shitty AU".

I've come across fics like this with over 2000 reviews it's heart wrenching.

Does the cliche of Harry winning the goblins' respect/loyalty by remembering Griphook's name still exist? Either way, I'd love to see a fic where they just throw that bullshit back in his face. "You expect us to get weepy-eyed and subservient because you remembered a name? What do you think we are, house-elves?"
