The curse on the ring was supposed to kill more or less instantly. It was only Snape's intervention that slowed the spread of the curse and allowed Dumbledore to live the year out. So Dumbledore walking around with a shrivelled hand would not make Voldemort think his horcrux was compromised, as it's a completely different result to what he would expect.

(It's similar to basilisks ordinarily killing all their victims, not petrifying them, making it no surprise that Dumbledore never figured out the monster in CoS was a basilisk. He lacked the key piece of information which Hermione possessed - that Harry was hearing voices in the walls.)

I wonder if he thought there was a Gorgon hidden among the student body.

What are the different dueling styles utilized in the books? For example, relying heavily on transfiguration.

I hate to make a new thread for a question like this but simply put. In Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron are following little spiders do you think that they where regular spiders and that the big spiders in the forest where Acromantulae? Or where the small spiders that Ron and Harry where following baby Acromantulae. What does your head canon say?

I'm pretty sure they were just normal spiders.

How do you think Voldemort originally planned to reveal himself before Harry and his friends revealed that he really was back to Fudge and the Ministry? Do you even perhaps think that Voldemort never intended to reveal himself at all and instead rule from the shadows?

Do we know what Voldemort looked like just before the AK was reflected back at him or did he look like Harry first saw him at the end of Philosopher's Stone?

Hagrid describes him as not being Human enough to die, that could imply a certain physical change.

The fact that Fudge et al recognised Voldemort in OotP implies that his post-resurrection body is very similar to what he looked like before his fall.

I'd like to answer this, but it is a plot bunny question. I believe the intent of this thread is 'questions of interpretation of canon as if it were a body of law'.

    Maybe Merrythought?
Professor Galatea Merrythought is like 20 years older then Dumbledore and taught him as well as teaching for a long time under 3 different Headmasters. As a senior teacher with a lot of tenure she'd be an obvious choice for next Headmaster/Mistress, but in canon she retired the year The Chamber of Secrets was opened. If she maybe told Dippet of her interest in the Headmaster post well a lot of factors (You may need prestige to be Headmaster of Hogwarts, also gender equality?) I think she may be pureblood (Likely considering she served under Phineas Black).

Hmm, well she's practically an OC so you can make up any number of reasons why she does things but a lot of reasons need to be given for (Allowing a werewolf which could be excused as not having any discrimination or even in the opposite direction using it as an excuse to experiment but also why she decided not to retire is critical), but again likely pureblood so really it could go either way on if she tolerates werewolves but it depends on if you think as a close teacher of Dumbledore( she taught him to duel) if she influenced him adversely or not. Also depends on if Remus actively asked Dumbledore if he could enroll and if he would ask Merrythought. One thing to keep in mind is that they'd be Dumbledore's age in the 70's.

    Edited for clarity Zenzao

Ah, alright, thanks. I haven't really been in here before so far as I can remember so I figured I'd save a thread and ask, going to now go make that thread.

EDIT: Asked in the plot bunny thread as that really does make more sense.

This question is for everyone. When you come across the acronyms like OWL, DADA, or NEWTs in the Books or in fanfiction do you read them in your head as the the words they stand for or do you read them as the words they look like?

For most of them I say them as the word, newt, owl, etc. DADA I say the letters because it's not an intentional acronym and sounds dumb, or I just call it defense

Now that we know of the Houses in Ilvermony, I wonder if having Houses / Categories is some kind of requirement for magical schools

It's a very British thing, so I wouldn't expect it to show up in everywhere and especially not in the same configuration.
