No, he's just ignorant. Impossibly so (since its just for the sake of exposition) - but he isn't stupid.

I put KC up for review years back in part because I was trying to gauge the level of interest in the community in stories featuring the character. (I was considering writing a Shikamaru-centric fic at the time and had, what I thought, was a decent plot mapped out.) The hostility convinced me that there would be little interest in such a story.

You nailed it. This is what pissed me off so much about Naruto's character towards the end of the series, he stayed ignorant. The humour in an ignorant protagonist had run dry by that point and it was frustrating to have Naruto show such stupidity at times. I think it was totally fine to start the series with Naruto being the character the audience receives exposition through, but why not spread it around more, especially after we started seeing a more and more competent Naruto? I loathe extended character depreciating humour.

That sounds like something I would have said, and I might have still been a mod then.

I wouldn't say either of them were bad. Flawed, but not terrible.

The prose of Kagemane Complete is very stilted, and reads like a non-native English speaker because of that awkward phrasing. I found a few good parts in it among all the...rest, even though the wish-fulfillment is laid on very heavily and the pacing is very uneven. Characters are more flat than I would have liked, but bearable, and some of the strategies are almost worth mention.

Shadow and Wind: New Legends reads like wish-fulfillment (on Shikamaru's end, at least; Naruto is too much of an idiot...though, given the direction canon went in, I'm surprised the fanfics aren't worse). The prose, at least, is better than Kagemane Complete.

I happened to like Chiaroscuro a lot. Took me time to get used to the POV switches, but I found the characters far from wooden. The first few chapters were silly (and more Kakashi-centric), but Shikamaru started getting involved in the scheming (around the Chunin exams), it got much better. One of the few stories that properly showed mental as well as jutsu/power level development.

It's a shame more people don't like Shikamaru. To be fair, I despise laziness, too, especially in a world where you could realistically die because of it. He is, however, a character with plenty of potential, if only people would stop writing all those Temari and Ino shipfics.

You know what we call people who are unable to learn simple stuff after years of attempting to teach them?

    Clinically retarded.

Read it. Wouldn't recommend it as anything more than a short time waster. The author said the main premise of the fic is massively overpowered and kinda shoehorned...which it is.

But yeah, decent time waster and fairly well-written.

That's just the quest. Figured I'd post it to ff.net since I may or may not be picking it back up. I'm considering turning it into not a quest, but who knows.

Been reading a crack fic on a Naruto Harry Potter cross over: Itachi is that a baby and was wondering if there was any good quality serious cross over. I would love any recommendations.

Over the Hills and Far Away was decent the last time I read it, though it's been a lot of years since then so I don't know if the quality has held up to the test of time.

As someone whose day job (for the last few months) is to diagnose children with problems I can say that he is not Clinically retarded.

His problem looks more like learning disability. And generally speaking a bit attention by the way of after school lessons would be enough for him to keep up with children of his age.

Problem was he never got that attention until he was older and people has assumed he already knew the basics. So problem just excrebated until later.

Jiraya probably had his hands full teaching him.

I've decided to try new things in the Naruto world. Can anyone recommend any Sasuke centric fics that are worth reading?

    Thanks

I find reading Sasuke centric stories a bit like Draco centric stories. Something to be mostly avoided, for many of the same reasons.
That said, I remember this one being somewhat decent. I think it's been mentioned in the thread before

Well thanks for the recommendation and I understand where your coming from. I was just looking to see if there could be anything worth trying out.

Meh, Sasuke makes sense as a main character in a Naruto story. He's very involved in the main plot, he's got enough enough potential to rival anyone, and he's talented enough to reasonably grow into whatever type of fighter the author wants. The major landmine would be what the author does with the personality. These were decent from what I remember.
