Fuck, I'd need a telescope to read anything at that resolution, and I have a 21" monitor here at work using 1360x768. I switched to your 1680x1050 for a sec just to try it out - no, just no. Squinting while just about touching my nose to the screen isn't my idea of fun.

Out of interest, why can't we just create a fluid forum style? Everything save the banner should stetch without any need for adjustment provided the stylesheets are based on percentages, and that is easily fixable. We did the same for a forum layout I created for another site - we built a fluid layout, and a 2000 x 130 banner image (35.9KB in size) and just set it as a background image for a banner div with fixed height. With that done, the banner will load and display everything that will fit on the screen with the rest being cut off - no horizontal scrollbar being added because it's a background image.

You could even absolutely position an image with a transparent background to the far right of the screen, so that the banner always "ended" the way you wanted it to (again, we did this and it's not hard to do). Like with the "classic" DLP skin, just take a slice of the blazing house and anchor it to the right, with the "Dark Lord Potter" bit as a background image on the left hand side.

Just seems odd to me for work to be done producing fixed length layouts, which will never suit everyone, when a fluid one could be done just as easily that would.

... it may be just me, but I think exactly that was the point of this thread.

Anubis: Having the width stretch while the height remains constant would distort the image quite a bit. :\

No, you misunderstand. The banner doesn't stretch at all. You take a 2000px wide image and display it as a background image. What that means is that the image displays as a banner across your screen up to the edge of your window. Everything after that is then hidden. So if you're running 1024x768, you'll see 1024px of that image. Etc.

You make the image longer than the highest used resolution value - be that 2000, 3000 or whatever. What you basically get is a banner that can accomodate any number of resolutions without stretching - it just displays the appropriate amount of itself. That's why you can anchor something to the right - so that it has an actual 'ending' rather than terminating unnaturally.

At that point it's better to have a min-size logo, then have a repeating image from there as with PatronusCharm. The issue is designing a logo to do that.

A repeater is better in terms of a relatively small filesize difference certainly, but repeaters are very limiting in terms of what they can do since they obviously need to be able to repeat. The cloud effect on the ProjectDLP banner would be impossible for a repeatable banner, for example, but would work fine on a large fluidly displayed banner.

It's really a matter of personal preference for a developer for the most part. I just felt it would be remiss not to point out that creating one fluid style may be better than creating many of a fixed width. At the end of the day, I suppose so long as we get layout sizes to suit more people it matters little which approach is utilised :)

While I technicly have a 32 inch hdtv screen as my monitor, I vote 1280 because its just that much more practical given the range of screens I use from work to school to even my blackberry.

    I have two main ones.

    1280 x 800, and 1440 x 900. Chances are, I'm getting a new monitor one of these days.

When my old Viewsonic A90f finally bit the dust, I found out that everybody and their brother had quit selling CRT-based monitors... and immediately after I bought an LCD to replace it, they also quit selling any LCD that wasn't widescreen.

If I were to replace my current monitor with one the same height, it would have to be an enormous widescreen, and thus cost a fortune.

I fear the day this monitor blows up.
