Seeing as there are a few other running threads for Shonen Manga, I suppose there is no harm in starting up another one.

    http://www.onemanga.com/Fairy_Tail/

So far, I've found it to be a reasonably decent manga with a lot of good story potential. If nothing else, I have to give it credit for having interesting female characters that are not simply background and/or love interests, and can hold their own in a fight (not exactly common in a Shonen manga).

So, has anyone else been following it?

    I have, sort of.

It looks like one piece, from a glance. Without the fail though. I like it.

It's like One Piece, but with fail instead of win.

It's One Piece, only trying to appeal to DnD players and/or Harry Potter fans. Even so, its story arcs are more captivating than OP, its magical powers are just that, without the 'lol, we eat magical fruits and can fly afterward' and there's more fanservice.

    I approve.

...It doesn't hurt that the anime is drawn in a totally different way than OP.

Been following this for a long time. I really enjoy it. It's not serious or convoluted. The story telling is pretty straightforward and fun. Tons of fanservice but characters in the story make fun of that aspect every now and then so it doesn't get irritating.

Otherwise it's dramatic and has the whole 'my nakama!' underpinnings which we've seen many times.

The art is a bit toony but that's okay, it goes well with the comical storyline and characters.

I like it. It isn't nearly as annoying as OP, even though the art looks incredibly familiar. The one criticism I have is that it seems that the story arcs aren't foreshadowed at all - and it seems like there's no logical connection between them.

I follow it and it isn't all that bad, the characters are a bit annoying and it is a world that doesn't make sense but well, it is not a dealbreaker. It comes off as a cheap knockoff from One Piece, which it is, but it isn't bad. Funny at times with a huge amount of fanservice but a really light read.

One thing though, the Dragon Slayers made no sense to me, if they were trained and raised by Dragons to learn Dragon techniques, why are they called Dragon Slayers if, in fact, they haven't slain any Dragon but were their disciples instead? And why would Dragons teach humans on how to kill them?

Been following it for a good while.

Having read the author's other manga, Rave Master, I have some bad things to say about Fairy Tail. The art is a duplicate, and half of the characters are duplicates.

There is a fair amount of interesting characters, but they're all what you'd expect of a shounen manga. Similiarly to One Piece, the 'emotional' scenes are big, often and important, with resolve and will to continue on the most important.

This is just yet another shounen manga that I just follow 'cause I'm bored.

The alternate universe arc is now over, and we're entering the typical "promotion exam" arc. Should be interesting.

(Is anyone still reading this by the way?)

I lost interest when it started looking like everyone in the manga was secretly Gerard.

Maybe I'll pick it up again, someday, but I'm not all that entertained at the moment.

    Yeah, I'm still following it.

We just got rid of another Gerard. The original this time, or so we're told. Hopefully I'll never see his mug again.

One can only hope; I've found Gerard to be an extremely annoying plot tumor. Every time he shows up, it just sends things downhill.

Still following it; it's not great, but it keeps me entertained. Curiously, despite the fact that a lot of people say its very similar to One Piece, I never really managed to get into One Piece.

It's not like One Piece, because One Piece is about 10 fucktons better.

    Fucktons.

It is however turning somewhat decent, where as before it ganked a lot of good shit from One Piece which was the only reason I was following it. It now feels as though it is sort of standing on its own legs.

201 was a interesting chapter, not much happened the female kittens predictions or what not has made me interested in the next chapter for the first time.

I hope the don't disappoint and kill off a minor character instead of a major one. I'm not one to scream at authors to kill of major characters, but it is set up perfectly.

Also, I lol at the people who say they can't get into One Piece but keep reading Naruto and Bleach. It's been 3 weeks and I wonder how I could ever stand Naruto without reading/watching something awesome before it.

Some TV shows helped me out there though. :)

Edit: To be clear, it stole a lot of stuff from One Piece, but the original was better and still is better. If every chapter is better than the one before it for about 3/4 years running (Since the OP sky Island arc), then get back to me and ask me to compare them. Until then, with the way it is now it is a semi-decent time waster which may have just turned decent time waster.

My first reaction upon seeing this thread title was that I thought it was about the infamous gateway-hentai series Bondage Fairies...

That reminds me of a Naruto/Bondage Fairies x-over.

Anyways, anyone else feel slightly disappointed about the 'fanservice scenes' that we've seen alot more frequently lately? Not that some naked flesh is bad, but I don't remember Fairy Tail having so much of it. Trying to sell Shonen manga with some ecchi... That, and the drawing style isn't exactly complimentary for erotica.

I have to agree there; then again, I've always found fanservice more than a little annoying, mostly because it doesn't really do anything for the story other than eat up time and panel-space that could have been spent doing something that was actually productive. Seriously, a lot of fanservice comes across as "Crap the next chapter is due in two hours, and we don't have anything put on these pages, so ... um ... hey, look, boobies!"

If I wanted Anime or Manga softcore porn, it would probably take me about five seconds to go find some. That pretty much makes fanservice completely pointless.

    lol, so true.

I read a lot of the alternative universe arc but got bored of it. Glad they are done with it, I will pick it up again.

    If you'd like a summary:

Evil human guy was stealing the magic from the real world. The cat-thingies were going to fight the humans. In the end, the evil king guy got defeated.

    Oh, and Lisanna came back.

Three chapters up this week instead of the usual one; I have to say, getting a triple update does make for a nice contrast with the recent hiatuses in most of the big Shonen titles.

As for the updates themselves, looks like things are going to be getting very interesting, what with the sudden plot revelations and all.
