I thought it might be helpful for people to share the resources they've found that have helped them in the task of writing HP fanfic. It can be kind of daunting, especially if you're writing a story with a large scope, because not only is the canon world pretty complicated, there's also a ton of information about it on the internet, some reliable and some not so much.

Here are a couple links I've found myself referring to over and over.

Potterwords - Harry Potter Word Usage Guide

Basically, a super-handy reference that lists all the HP "things" (places, terms, spells, etc.) and how to punctuate / capitalize them correctly. So, you can use it both as a reference if you want to see a list of all the books mentioned in the HP Series...

I'll just pause for a moment to scribble a few notes for a one-shot based on Charming Your Own Cheese.

Or, you can use it to look up a specific term and make sure you're using it correctly. Like, the owl store in Diagon Alley. My memory says it's something like "Eyelops" - so you can just control-f for "owl emporium" and you get...

And I've answered my next question as well! Eeylops, Eeylop's, or Eeylops' ? Boom, answered. Never abuse an apostrophe again.

    Speaking of which...

    The Dreaded Apostrophe

Not HP specific, but I'll just leave it there anyway because it's a great and easy way to think about the concept.

Chronicles of Peter Potter in Wonderland

Harry Potter name generator. Choose male or female, and off you go. Great for people like me who stress out over names. Yes, I'm the guy who fires up a new RPG and spends like 3 hours on the character creation process, and half of it is picking a name. However, if you're sticking in a few random OCs - trying to flesh out the Gryffindors one year above Harry, for example - this site can be great.

    Anyway, who's got more?

Two things I think would be really helpful but haven't managed to track down:

    1. A comprehensive guide to students at Hogwarts organized by year. (Bonus points if broken down or color-coded into Houses)

    2. A spell list. I know there are a bunch out there, but the three or four I've found aren't comprehensive. What I'm looking for would include only canon spells (no Pottermore/video games/movies), and be organized by "level" - that is, when an average student would reasonably be able to use it. Included would be a description of the spell (plus citations for its appearance and use in the books), the incantation, and canon evidence / speculation as to its "level."
