    Announcement

Following the unexpected popularity of the Boxing Day quiz, the New Year's Quiz will go live tomorrow, Saturday 31st December, at 1600 GMT. That translates to the following times:

    San Francisco 0800
    New York 1100
    London 1600
    Berlin 1700
    New Delhi 2130
    Perth 0000 (Sunday 1st)
    Sydney 0300 (Sunday 1st)
    Aukland 0500 (Sunday 1st)

    Sorry Australians.

Prize: $15 Amazon voucher (or local equivalent)

Prize is awarded to the first DLPer who submits a valid entry with all the questions correct.

    Instructions

As before this is a "complete the sentences" quiz (technically known as a ditloid quiz).

    Example question: H S of W and W

Example answer: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Questions can be places, people, items, lines from the books... anything HP really. Note that they can also be descriptions of the above, or collections of the above unified by a theme.

This one is a bit harder than the last quiz - for at least one question, you're probably going to need to look at the books. But there's still plenty of easy and medium difficulty questions too.

To submit an entry, PM me the answers here on the forums. You may enter multiple times but can only ever have one "active" entry, with each entry considered as rescinding your previous entries. That means that you can have all the questions correct, but if you then submit another entry with different, incorrect answers, the incorrect more recent entry will be the one that is considered. This is to prevent people hedging their bets.

The timestamps on the PMs will be conclusive evidence of which correct entry was made first. For that reason IRC entries will not be considered valid, especially as my online status may vary.

Hint: pay attention to the punctuation!

    Questions are now live.

---------- Post automerged at 04:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:03 PM ----------

Question number five (incidentally the most obscure of all the questions) has undergone an emergency replacement after its answer was shared in IRC. Replacement has been made to ensure IRC and forum denizens are on a level playing field.

Incidentally, the original question five was:

    S B, L S of the P S G, The H

Stubby Boardman, Lead Singer of the Popular Singing Group, The Hobgoblins

I had considered it ultra-obscure and likely the hardest question, but I failed to account for an expert in all things Sirius Black being present.

It's still all to play for, for people just arriving. The best I know someone has is 10/20. As I had hoped, it's going to last to tomorrow at least :)

This is much harder than the Boxing Day one. I can get number 12 and no others. My hat off to TMD

So the leaderboard is currently wordhammer and TMD both on 19/20, but stuck on different questions since last night. Can anyone catch up before they get the final one?

I think whoever writes the next quiz (hint: not me) will maybe struggle to find questions of the right difficulty level. The more quizzes we do, the more obscure the questions will have to become.

Congrats, TMD. Between the five of us doing this last night, we got 12 (including two half marks for ones where we'd got the right idea, but the wrong words in some points). We'd never have got all of them though. Great fun though, thanks Taure.

I'm just glad I did my part, immortalised forever here in abbreviated IRC log form:

The lesson here is not to underestimate the power of seeing "Sorry Australians" in that first post and taking it as a challenge, along with not underestimating me still being drunk from New Year's, and definitely not underestimating the goddamned Blackman. That was also the only question I solved, but after that performance, why even bother?

Arrrgh! I knew it would be mortifying once I saw it. The centaurs said it three times in that chapter. If I'd been doing the read-along, it would have been so obvious.

Congratulations TMD and thank you Taure for a challenging (if frustrating) contest.
