I think this is the right place for this - my sincere apologies if not.

DLP, if you could do anything, be doing it anywhere, what would you do?

I am honestly curious, and I want to ask a forum of people who I have spent half my darn life with...

What would you do, if you just... could?

Cabin in the woods and fly fish?

    Tropical island and mango hunt?

Dusty old library and research a topic of your choice?

I will confess the reason I ask is twofold - 1) I want to know where you'd rather be, and 2) I want to write stories around this topic.

So, if you could be anything, anywhere, tomorrow... be honest.

I was talking with @Gengar about this the other day randomly.

I think, if I could do or be anywhere? It'd be a bar I owned that didn't need to be profitable.

A good bar is a man's romance, you know?

    But location wise... somewhere wintery.

A beautiful minimistic house overlooking the ocean (or a large lake), in a nice tropical area.

Not need to worry about money and being able just to drift on by, making mods for my favorite games (or a whole game myself), writing, enjoying time with my friends and drinking mojitos on the beach. I would also like to get involved in a non-profit and help people who need it.

In a broader sense, probably a self-insert into a cool universe (kek). If the universe is fantasy--meaning no toilets and tp, but magic is available--then I'd also like to be some kind of undead wizard who doesn't need to use the bathroom ever. With the provision that I can hop back here at will.

What I'd rather be doing right now? Playing any of a hundred games I've missed out on in the past few years on a beefy PC rig, in a room without windows (because with windows you can never guarantee that there won't be some fucking reflection on your screen) and using a giant 60 inch curved TV for display. An awesome gaming swivel chair and comfortable headseat to complete the picture.

Alternatively, I'd be taking a supercar around a famous racetrack. A Porsche on the Nürburgring. Always wanted to do that. Ideally my super popular and acclaimed genre fiction series would be paying for this flight of fancy.

Interestingly, I would not change all that much in terms of where I am now. If I could do anything, without any concern for things like money, I would still want to be a lawyer -- just a different type of lawyer. I'd be a barrister rather than a solicitor (a barrister's work is more academic in nature than a solicitor's, but the route to qualification is significantly more uncertain and requires a large amount of out of pocket costs which I simply couldn't afford) and would specialise in IP rather than maritime. Not that I dislike maritime, but right now IP is where all the really interesting legal questions are being asked over things like the legal status of Bitcoin (FYI, not yet considered a form of property).

What I would change is how I got here. I would study different subjects at school, a different subject at university and at a different university, I would have taken up the offer to learn piano at age 11, etc. But yeah, despite all those changes I'd still want to end up in largely the same place.

Physically speaking I would definitely stay in the same place.

I'd open a bookstore stocked only with books I personally liked. No celebrity biographies or cookbooks up in here. Possibly a cutesy adjoining cafe, and any patrons who attempt to read books in the cafe without purchasing them would have the skin flayed from their bodies to make leather to bind my books in.

I'd live in a house on the seaside somewhere in Europe. Somewhere with big vistas and not too many people, with good walks for dog walking. Old houses. I don't know what I'd do for work, but in my spare time, I'd write more.

I'd open my own bar/music venue. Full PA system, custom built stage, professional lighting rigs and a fully retractable partition so when it's quieter I can keep the feel of a small, cosy bar.

I would live on an awesome beautifully fitted 20s style airship with great wifi that was unrestricted by air-traffic laws and fuel procurement problems and drift around the world dropping in on people and places.

My unrealistic dream was always of a smallish scooner. Use to ferry expensive stuff around the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean. And for days at a time it would be just me and the sea.

And it would be warm, oh so warm. I would rise and fall to the rocking of the waves. With nary a sound nor site to disturb me. No person or anything just me and the sea.

How I now imagine Sorrows' life:

Used to ferry "expensive stuff". I think we all know what we're talking about here.

Mine's quite similar to that of a few. Basically The Talented Mr. Ripley, but without all the death and rampant narcissism.

In practice, this means somewhere coastal. A nice boat, lovely ladies and fly linen suits with lots of pastel colours. Preferably in Europe, where a major city would only be an hour's flight or so away.

    Hemorrhoids?

I imagine you'll miss taking dumps after a while. I think it might actually stimulate the prostrate a little.

If we're sticking to reality, I'd live in a cabin at the base of a mountain. It'd be well stocked with food, drinks, and drugs as well as entertainment (books, video games, etc.). I'd spend most of my days getting high and going on hikes and nature walks.

If we can venture into the realms of fantasy, then I'd love to live in a sentient magical floating cabin that's much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. It would take me around the world and show me all kinds of wonderful things. After we finish seeing most of what Earth has to offer, we'd venture out into space and begin our journey into the unknown.

I don't know, and that's just the problem. So far i've been carrying on with a stopgap career choice - even if I don't have anything i'm particularly passionate about in life, other people do. So why not keep them alive and healthy, so at least they get to enjoy the things that make them happy.

I'd certainly stay where I am though, same house in the same city.

In my Platonic ideal, I'd be independently wealthy and would bankroll a research institution with a mission to change humanity for the better. We'd bring in visiting scholars from around the world, a convergence of the greatest minds looking to solve humanity's most profound problems. Of course, we'd serve sparkling wine with lunch and have mandatory afternoon espressos in an open-air patio with glass white-boards. Ideas would flow, passions would be fed, and money wouldn't be a limitation on brilliance. In my head, I pattern this off of the Santa Fe Institute, but with a different focus.

In my spare time I'd be Batman.

I do charity work and a bunch of catered events that I put on for people in the community. I house and employee them to a certain degree for up keep either building the housing or maintaining it.

Generally I would like to travel the world more. Not in the quest of more charity but to see things that I've never seen. My own mortality has been tested more than I care to admit over the years and I just want what's best for my kids. I want them to see the things I have never seen and do things I've never done.

Long term I'd like to set up some endowment programs for my community and my people. There are less than three hundred speakers of Cherokee and I would like to do something to encourage heritage and atleast secure that for future generations of Cherokee people..

If I could have anything, I would live in a beautiful vintage house surrounded by trees near the sea on the east coast of Canada. I wouldn’t have neighbours, just me, myself, and maybe some pets. I wouldn’t have to worry about money, and perhaps I’d work three days a week in a courthouse (the job I have now) just for fun. I’d garden, travel, and shop for whatever I’d like. My house would be close to a good shopping center so I don’t have to go far for groceries. I’d be a published author and my internet would be very fast.

How likely is this dream? Eh.

Problem is location and money. I live on the west coast in Vancouver, where you can buy dumps for a million dollars and not a penny lower. I’m getting out as soon as I can since that earthquake also worries me. However, I work in provincial government, so I can’t leave BC without leaving my career, and federal government is having some significant and depressing payroll issues. The Maritimes are also well-known for not having jobs.

Even if I did land a job in the Maritimes, I wouldn’t have the money to have a pretty house. Maybe if I had a partner, but that’s not me, so on one income, I think this dream is out of my reach unless something changes.

I’m still going to be a published author though. Only death will stop me.
