Remember EDI? The AI on the Normandy in Mass Effect 2?

    Well, in Mass Effect 3:

    she gets a robot body.

Complete with boobs. And apparently a functioning vagina.

Just kidding, that would be really stupid. Obviously I'm joking.

I'm not joking. Anyone else think this is horrible writing?

She [again these are actual spoilers]
Has sex with Joker. There's a scene were Mordin tells Joker that EDI's body isn't flexible like organic tissue so they'll have to use pillows, cushions, and gel packs.

Ok, this image contains a spoiler (same one in my earlier spoiler tags though)

Big chunks of the script leaked a while ago, when they accidentally put a demo/beta on Xbox live, and people were able to rip a bunch of dialogue from the game.

---------- Post automerged at 02:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:27 AM ----------

Here's the relevant dialogue for that scene I mentioned with Mordin.
Again, as far as I know these are actual spoilers. Nothing that I hadn't revealed earlier in the topic though.

Mordin: Alloy of EDI's body not flexible like organic tissue. Could cause unintentional damage. Recommend pillows, cushions, possibly gel packs.
Joker: Okay, that's a little weirder, but... yeah, all right. Cushions.
Mordin: Positioning critical to success. Can forward EDI charts, videos with relevant data.
Joker: No, no-no! Let's, uh... EDI's pretty busy with, you know, stuff. Let's... uh, just send that to me.
You're not gonna tell anyone about this, right? Like Shepard? Shepard doesn't really need to know.
Mordin: Guarantee Shepard won't learn about it from me.
Joker: He's/She's standing right there, isn't she?
    Shepard: I wish I wasn't.

We have an ME3 thread, even if it hasn't been bumped in forever. -_-

I figured they'd try pulling something like this. Pretty fucking stupid.

Meh. Honestly, it's better than being a disembodied talking vagina.

(Seriously, though-- Who gives a fuck? If anything I find it funny that the Normandy is staffed entirely by kinky bastards.)

I don't know, it could turn out to be one of those ideas that look horrible on paper and then silences the critic in the actual game.

Anyway, it made me think of an embodied Shodan, which is a cool thought.

My problem stems mainly from the idea that they're making the EDI/Joker thing physical -- sexualizing it. I had sort of liked it before because it was very nonphysical. It was a different kind of relationship altogether as opposed to Shepard's relationships. I don't see any need in altering that.

One of the things I really liked about EDI was that they didn't try to push her being a "her". Her avatar was just a weird sphere hologram thing. Besides the voice, there's nothing that makes her a "her" at all. Really, I should be using "it". I like when writers realize that AIs are not, in fact, humans inside of a computer. EDI, quite frankly, isn't human at all. I'm totally fine with her joking around with and having a platonic sort of relationship with humans. But horniness?

I mean, I don't consider myself a prude at all, but giving EDI boobs and a vagina (which gets used!) seems totally degrading to her character.

I realize I'm really not clear at all on what the swearing policy for DLP is. I'd have used more colorful language, but I notice that there's markedly less curse words on DLP than other forums I frequent.

Are you sure you aren't the one who's delighted, Jon?

I believe it was something along the lines of "JackxEDIxShepard OTP".

    :p

This isn't surprising at all to me, Bioware has taken the Kirk approach to almost every alien they've introduced, what's a robot matter?

It could still be nonphysical and Mordin is just reading too much into it.

Though if thats the case they're pretty much just reusing that joke.

Well I'm sure they didn't want to copy Cortana from Halo. I think it was Interstitium that brought up the idea of the uncanny valley too, which EDI would probably want to avoid.

EDI has a female voice coupled with very human characteristics, so out of convenience we (and the crew of the Normandy) refer to her as "she." Gender is a social construction anyway and doesn't rely on biological characteristics.

I think using "it" would be more of a derogatory term -- "he" or "she" also serve as badges of personhood, sort of our way of acknowledging that they're thinking entities with just as much value as organic beings. Which, as we know, in the Mass Effect universe is the issue of contention between synthetics and organics.
