I was always taught that it was BODMAS (Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction), though I've learned since that Division/Multiplication and Addition/Subtraction are done from left to right. Yeah, my school sucked at teaching maths.

So if you were subtracting 11 from 12 you would first subtract 1 from 1 and then 1 from 2, right?

And you're not the first English person I've seen use this. Granted the last one was 15...

I mean that in an equation with both a multiplication and division I'd work from left to right in order to solve them.

He means the order of operations. [Ninjad]

Though, regarding your subtraction, if I were to do it formally and not in my head I would subtract 1 from 2, leaving 1, then 1 from 1, leaving 0. By starting with the ones, then on to the tens, then the hundreds, etc. you can carry.

Funny picture thread here guys, not another lengthy thread about how to do basic maths. >.> Anyone still confused about how to multiply can head on over here for some good, old-fashioned DLP style discussion.

Also these next links aren't for a picture, but man, it's oh so relevant -- $0.02 or 0.02 cents? (I'm sure this has it's own thread here somewhere, but just re-linking for people who haven't run across it...)

A Short Excerpt (check this one out at least)
Original Full Length Recording (somewhat long, but full of lawls)
    Full Story (with various links)

~~ Now for some Pictures ~~
