He could be figuratively dead. The assassination "attempt" may have been meant to make it look like he was killed, then Mab comes in, heals his wound, and makes him work full time as the Winter Knight.

I am unhappy. Specifically, I am unhappy with the ending. In what possible universe is it okay to en a novel with a cliffhanger like that?

Just a few lines before the end, Harry says something like, "Screw it, maybe she'll be early." That would have been an acceptable place to end it.

I don't see that. Harry just saved his life, after all.

If anyone, I'd say it was his landlady. After she found out that it was his fault that her house burned down.

Also, why don't posts in this section show up on my recent posts page?

It was Future!Maggie. She trained to become a master assassin and then went back in time to kill the fuck who killed that nice lady who visited her family before he disappeared, ironically causing him to disappear in the first place since Mab takes him into the Nevernever through a Way in the lake and only lets him out to do business.

So she was a normal mortal and is now dead... you know who are dead? Black Court Vampires.

Mavra is Dresden's granny. Or great granny. Point is, the granny is slowly decomposing as a walking, talking, homicidal corpse.

I thought magic was maternally based?

SO how could Margaret have been a witch if her mother wasn't?

It's usually maternal. But nobody really understands how it works.

See Harry's talk with Michael at the end of PG.

I'm not sure if the talk at the end of Proven Guilty is the best source to cite, because Harry was specifically trying to encourage Michael not to realize that Charity had been a practitioner and so he might have played it down.

That said I was fairly sure that we'd heard the same thing a few other times in the series that while magic usually passes down through the mother it's not impossible to get it elsewhere. Not 100%.

I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in White Knight as well. When the Whites are killing off the minor practioners it's mentioned that while it would not wipe all of the potential future wizards out, it would severely reduce their numbers.

Maybe it's based on the child's proximity to a magical being during development. Having a wizard mother would be a guarantee, and having a wizard male spending a lot of time with the mother/fetus, along with some magic sperm, could also result in the child developing powers.

Would that mean that the first wizards were the product of women being near somthing big, magically? The big way I could see that happening would be human slaves to fae, annointed ones to God, or perhaps pets to Dragons (big D).

Jim said it had both genetic and environmental factors. For example, Charity giving up magic, was like her stacking environmental factors against the childrens' magical development
