For those who don't know, quick IMDB synopsis:

'Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.'

Basically, it brings into play characters you'd read about in RL Penny Dreadful novels.

There's not much more to say after two episodes (dunno how I could DL the second one before it's even aired...), but it's got me hooked so far. It's super dark and gruesome - appropriate for the gothic setting - and superbly acted.

    Anyone else watching?

I prefer it to the American Horror stories show.

Wtf happened at the end of the 2nd episode? Was that an Alien-style birth?

I imagine that's the first monster Frankenstein created and then subsequently abandoned.

He also didn't come from within, but killed him from behind iirc. Remember victor had to close that door as soon as he got in.

Can't believe i actually thought that this show was one of those shitty fantasy/romance crap that's been getting popular lately. It didn't help that the site i usually watch tv series from gave wrong summary for the show. :/

Thank you Hugplx for causing me to reconsider my first assessment. This show is one of the most intriguing thing I've watched in a while.

I'm watching it and it has me absolutely captivated, there's something about it that is just amazing.

I like what I've seen of Dorian Gray. What other legends do you think will appear? Dracula being the most obvious one.

Who is the most iconic female monster?

Honestly? I dunno. I'm just enjoying the performances of the four main characters so far.

Eva Green during the seance was chilling.

I have absolutely no idea why I originally wrote this show off but I sincerely regret not watching it before now, I absolutely love it.

Also a theory on Ethan I heard floating around that could be bad or it could be good
Ethan is a werewolf, its why he woke up outside like that, why he pretty obviously had to go on the run and why he was able to get over the whole monsters are real thing so fast but still seemed hesitant about getting involved any further. There's even the possibility that hes the one who committed the murders, he shifted and attacked those people with no conscious memory of it.

It could fly, works with the US Marshal angle that he is running away from at home.

Rich Daddy sweeps disgraced son's 'eccentricities' under the rug with the old cash broom.

Wasn't a fan of the whole first half of this episode. It felt like a shitty fanfiction, down to the 'BEAT THE DEMON' scene and flashbacks :-/

Everything with the 'League of Extraordinary Gents' was awesome though, lol

The first two episodes of this were great. But the latest two are kind of a let down. Feels like they haven't done anything of note in them.

    Also, episode 4's ending... o_O
Everyone swings that way for Dorian.

I was thinking that too and found it a little too convenient. Some kind of vampiric like 'charm' maybe? Would explain why Ives is so suddenly smitten and seemed to have to work off her lust with that random on the street

I agree 3 wasn't as good as the first two, but I liked four. The suspense is building up nicely and I'm constantly on the edge of my seat.

That last scene was absolutely beautiful.

This show is the interactions between characters. Each one of them has a sensation, is a distinct thing, like Dorian's perfumes. Their interactions, their meshing or clashing, it's all a work of art.

EDIT: I think what I'm trying to say above is... watch this show high. xD

    It's a million times better.

    Another flashback episode...

I suppose it was interesting, but what do you guys think of them?

In general, I hate flashbacks. I feel like a skilled director or author can weave it into the narrative without slapping you in the face with it. It's a trade off, you either go the full exposition, or you keep the mystery and intrigue.

I think I prefer the latter.

The latest episode was almost a complete bottle episode. Damn Ethan entering the house and leaving. I really enjoyed it, even if the ending came out of left field.
Was there any hint of Ethan being a Catholic priest before? Or did I misunderstand the climactic scene?

It has me excited for the finale.

Hard to say what happened at the end there, but he's a werewolf for sure. Maybe one who looked to god to solve his problems in the past?

Either that or he was possessed by God to beat Satan back into the ground. Yours probably makes more sense. :p

Both could be true. The look in his eyes as it began was very 'sudden'.
