No doubt most of the actual Star Trek fans have already heard about the upcoming Star Trek movie being made by Cloverfield director JJ Abrams. They came out with a teaser a while back, and finally came out with a new TV Spot which frankly... looks pretty fucking cool.

I've always been kind of a reluctant Star Trek fan, I've seen the movies, I'll watch it if there's nothing else on TV... but I'm not about to name my kid Spock or go out of my way to watch it. This new trailer has me pretty excited though. Cloverfield was fail, but I'm hoping Abrams can pull this one off.

Yeah. I wasn't too thrilled at the original teaser trailer. And the fact that it was with the original Enterprise didn't help that much either... but when I watched Quantam of Solace a couple of days ago, and watched the trailer... holy hell yes. I will definitely go see this movie, it looks like it's going to be kickass. Star Trek: The Original Series with modern day video technology. Just one thing to say about that:

    :awesome

Am I the only one not excited by this movie...

And I'm an unrepentent trekie at heart.

Don't get me wrong. I don't wear I heart Kirk shirts, and I think the original series was okay for its time but nothing special.

But this new adaptation has so many faults to it in my opinion.

One of the major ones in my opinion is the casting. For the lead ship in the fleet, there should be atleast a late 30 year old as kirk. Everyone there looks like their in their late 20's max.

They tried to hard to make the crew eyecandy.

Also whats with all the white. Its like the inside of the ship is a giant urinal.

I'll reserve my judgement on sylar spock but I don't think he was the right choice. Unless he gives an exemplarie performance all anyone will see when hes on screen is a Heroes fanbase grab.

I have no idea what the plot of this movie is but I haven't been able to see any hint of it in the trailer and that worries me. That tells me that they don't want to give a hint toward it as its nothing really great.

Most great movies you get teased with the conflict in the trailer to raise speculation but without that in the trailer that tells me that this movie is just the studios excuse to make a money grab based on an established series. I mean what about this new movie isn't a grab at something

    Sylar: heroes fan base
    jjAbrams: cloverfield, lost fan base
TOS remake: hardcore trekie fan base
Flashy special effects: digi freak outreach.

Hunky crew and bootyliscious Ahura: Eyecandy grab.

I'll see it after I see a couple reviews I don't wanna ruin the series for myself. I envision another Hulk movie. The first one.

Meh. I'll watch it, and I'll probably enjoy it, but Star Trek needs to move on from the past. There's no reason why they can't make a new series. There's a huge fanbase out there just waiting for one. Enterprise was okay, but there's only so much drama you can get out of watching the past. I want new stuff!

voyager was epic because their was a central goal for them. all the other series was just random exploration.

Even enterprise was good when they had missions that spanned seasons. They need to make a new series that has that kind of element.

Thats what tng and tos lacked, even though I did love tng quite a bit.

I fear with the new movie if it bombs then it might be a decade before they try again.

DS9 was good, they had the Dominion war plot that slowly built up over the seasons and then for the last few seasons rocked.

I don't know DS9 bugged me quite a bit. Something about the gritty cardacian station and the uber spiritual bajorins(sp) pissed me off. I only watched it to keep track with voyager and the tie ins.

Spock/Kirk is the origin of slash. Having them as eye-candy will certainly feed the fangirls.

It was better since I think it was the first Star Trek to actually have somewhat of a larger plot instead of the idiotic episodic format I can't stand. It seems rare nowadays but I remember in the past most tv series were episodic stand alone in nature. Attention spans must have grown I suppose.

However, DS9 still fell prey to the same weakness. The Defiant was used to solve every situation and there was something about the whole little kid Ferengi that pissed me off. In fact children ruin a great deal of Star Trek shows. At least Enterprise did not have little Archers running around on the deck. Hated Sisko jr.

And I still claim that they ripped off of Babylon 5, which by contrast I enjoyed greatly. At its time it was, in my opinion the best sci-fi series.

Actually the baylon 5 deal was intentional from its creators. Apparently they were trying a new concept for the series they wanted to test out.

This is second hand info from a guy I hate but I'm fairly certain he was telling the truth. Apparently he had a sit down with one of the creators at one of those scifi conventions.

Star trek has always had problems moving away from the episodic format simply because they're premis is to esplore the unknown and they can't keep running into the same shit. And your right the children were annoying. Thats one thing the original series had over the new ones was that there were no children in the main cast.

I always envisioned these ships to be like naval ships and you don't bring the littleuns for your tour of duty.

One character they never truly used to their full extent... Gaina!

They hinted at her species in the begining with Q and apparently she is from the delta quadrant because thats where the Borg come from and thats where she traveled from. But then she just fell into the role of mysterious bartender and never really elaborated.

Even that cardacian from ds9 who was a hair dresser or tailor got his back story fleshed out eventually.

Oh yes. I so can't wait. Watched the Teaser already, and that alone gave me goosebumps ... with the snippets from real events, it achieves that every time. "The eyes of the world now look into space." (Kennedy, I believe) The Enterprise on the dockyard ... "Space, the final frontier ..." Yeah, the feel is back alright.

The website made me just about come, too, when I found it. The same with the new trailer. Can't wait, can't wait.

About the little kids. I think the Writers are thinking of the Navy stories and histories of the age of sail, and they just can't get it right.
The cabin boy in master and commander was fine in my humble opinion.
Naomi Novik's use of kids in the "Tereraire" series is a nice mix of Comedy and horror of war.
Nothing will every redeem weasley crusher, and will wheaton signed onto what could have been a great start to an acting career and became the Adam West (or worse) of my generation.

If I was the writer that had the market research exec saying put a kid in, I think I would try young person whose parent is a enlisted man, and he wants his kid to be an officer, and no nearby parents.

Needless to say the trailer I saw looked good, but when was the last time you saw a bad trailer.

I'm hoping that this'll look good, be good, and make me want more. That being said, Star Trek after DS9 sucked a great deal. Even the end of Voyager was a bit meh. It's time for a new, future series. The Enterprise concept was very good but I think that the people would appreciate a more future-looking sci-fi series rather then one that tries to stick close to modern technology.

Im not a Trekie and I've never been a fan of any of the series beyond the new Enterprise and that was only decent at best. However this movie looks fucking awesome and I will be going to see it when it comes out.

Just came from the theater and I'll sum it up in two words.

    Fucking Awesome.

This is a prime example of how movies have escalated to a whole new level thanks to movies like Bourne and Casino Royale. Special effects were top notch, and by that I mean this movie has raised the bar for upcoming Sci-Fi movies.

The characters were all portrayed well. Simon Pegg as Scotty irritated the shit out of me though. The story really does come together around Kirk and Spock developing respect, and eventually a friendship. Kirk is what he should always be, a ladies man and a badass. Even though he spends most of the movie getting the shit kicked out of him.

This just might have what it takes to usher in the next generation (see what I did there?) of Trekkies.

The movie just kicked ass, period.

Good movie, which could have been improved by being a little leaner. Quinto was beyond awesome as Spock, and I actually enjoyed Chris Pine's performance as well, even though he never really felt like Kirk to me, mostly because he lacked the steady self-confidence that Shatner brought to the role.

Something that occured to me later was that Pine was playing a version of Kirk who had never known his father, which made his portrayal make a lot more sense to me.

The only real low point was when Kirk is kicked off the ship and is later found by Future!Spock. That entire sequence was handled badly. A much simpler way to go about it would have been to have Nero keep Future!Spock on the ship with him, and have the younger versions meet up with him after they sneak on board (and frankly, the whole time travel angle was poorly conceived to begin with, but that's a whole 'nother story.)

Getting Kirk into the Captain's chair wouldn't have hard either. Realistically, the crew would have backed him if he had tried to take command, given that Spock's course of action would have allowed Earth to be destroyed. It would have been easy enough to have Spock later realize that he really was doing the wrong thing, and offer his help with Kirk's plan.
