    YAHOO lol,

Current Specs (after my old (better) computer blew up)

    - Pentium II 450mhz (yay! )
    - ATI Radeon 9200 128mb AGP
    - Dunno my sound card...but its old and bad
    - 384mb SDRAM PC133
    - Windows XP Pro SP 2
    - 1x DVD-Rom, 1x 24x10x40 CDRW Drive

REALLY BAD SYSTEM! I can play most games without (major) lag on minimum graphics settings, but I still have my ancient games to fall back on *sighs*

All are fine except for these:
    RealTek AC'97 Audio
    Radeon 9250

The multiproc PC sounds like a monster in games though, only the 9250 and onboard sound is holding you back

I'm planning on getting an upgrade, thus I'm faced with the ethernal dilema - Intel or AMD?

Currently, I'm inclined towards buying the following combination:

    INTEL Celeron D 330 2.667GHz BOX, S478, 256KB Cache, FSB533, Prescott (~$80)
    +
    INTEL P4, ASUS P4U800-X / S478 / ULI M1683 / 800MHz / 3xDDR400 / AGP8X / 5 PCI / 6Ch Audio / LAN / 6 (~$45)

If someone has a better idea for the same price range (like buying a SEMPRON), or has some experience with this combination, drop a reply, will you?

Do not, under any circumstances, buy a Celeron. They are nothing more then retarded P4's. I guess it depends really, if you want to use it for games that come out recently, or if you're not a gamer at all and just wanna surf the net. My exp. with Celeron's is one filled with long wait times, system lock ups, slow performance all around.

My exp with this P4 2.6 ghz chip I was given is like being given a PC that is 20 times faster over the Celeron 2.0 ghz I had.

The mobo is a value choice I would possibly pair with something similar to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116178 but as I don't recognize the motherboard series number, I'd go with something a bit more mainstream. Couldn't find a motherboard I was comfortable suggesting in the 40-60 price range, you wanna try to get something with a series number a bit more recognized. Remember price for the motherboard is money well spent, as it is the soul of the PC. Skimping on a mobo, (I've been screwed a few times) is a guarenteed way to be sure you'll be RMA'ing the bastard, or have a port connection somewhere that wont work right.

Hit up newegg.com it's where I buy all my parts, and the prices kick ass. Shipping is usually 2-3 days max, I've had some stuff show up the next day.

The general consensus is AMD is better for higher end gaming, and from what I've seen it's true on my friend's PC. I'll switch eventually, but for right now I'm more comfortable with Intel, lol

I'd preffer Intel coz general opinion is that it's more stable than AMD, being designed for serious work rather than fun (I don't play games very often these days).

Since P4 orriginal's price is like 45-50 dolars higher than celleron, I don't think I'll go for it. As you can see, I'm buying extremely value/trash components, the cheapest on the market. Since I don't actually need a new comp for what I'm doing, thus I don't plan on investing any extra cash in it (I'm getting this as a compesation, so I'll practically pay only 20-30 euros).

I had selected that MBD coz I've seen it in many value configurations some distributers are offering, so I'm guessing it's stable. The other MBDs in the same prica range they have are ASUS P4PE2-X, ASUS P4V8X-X, ASUS P4VP-MX, GIGABYTE GA-8I845GVM-RZ, GIGABYTE GA-8I845GE-RZ,... They all look the same to me and I have no idea how to select the best one (after all, you can't benchmark the mainbord's reliabillity). Yes, I know, more cash = more music, but 100 bucks invested into perfectly stable mainboard that I don't actually need is a waste of money, unless I'm planning on running a server or some shit like that.

I saw that site, and truly, Celleron 2.66GHZ is 10 bucks cheaper than the price I've found, but with the shipping costs, it should reach pretty much the same value in the end.

Besides, I'm never ordering the stuff over net, because:
    1) If something breaks, it's a hassle trying to replace it. Definitely not worth my time for a few bucks difference.
    2) Custom and postal workers in my country have a nasty habbit of sticking their fingers into arriving packages and "helping" themselves to whatever they find likeable. I have a lot of friends who ordered something over net, only to receive a ruffled package with an empty box inside and "it's not our fault" bullshit when they went to complain... Yes, that's what you get when you dabble with the dark art... eh, communism.

Yea, I'm actually more looking forwards to buying some extra RAM (once I get a mainboard that supports DDR), than more speed, which I don't actually need.

Realistically, you don't need a beter comp than P3 700-800 mhz if you only need it for work (text, graphic, programming...). Actually, on my current 1200 Athlon, I can run pretty much any new game, except a few most advanced ones (Doom 3, HL2), that I don't play anyway.

Aye, depends on what the graphics are. My celeron w. a 9250 Radeon would choke when I tried to load AutoCAD 2005 with my job files on it, or with Terramodel 10.4 with the wireframe 3d model.

Was seriously waiting for it to get a voice one day and ask me "WTF areyou thinking trying that on me?!"

I'm planning on upgrading my sound card and graphics card soon and wondered what you guys thought I should go with. I'm not willing to pay loads for them though. I'm not rich and can't affort £200 for something that will need changing again after a year or so.

    So what do you think?

Grab you a Geforce 6800 off of ebay for 140$ or so, and an Audigy sound card. Those two upgrades, coupled with your PC will let you run most anything that's been out in the past 3 years at high, and stuff that came out this year at medium.

Other good alternative is a Geforce 6600GT, can find those @ newegg.com for like 99$+.

OK, I finaly did the upgrade. In the end, I have decided for AMD after all, since I could get 64bit version rather cheaply (actually, the whole thing was in bulk prices). So, here it is...

    AMD Sempron 2,6GHZ+ 64bit
Gygabyte mainboard (can't remember which though)
    512 MB RAM Kingstone
    Gygabyte DVD ROM
    Phillips DVD-RW recorder
    Samsung SyncMaster 740N

Meh, seems like the same shit to me...
