"Sakura! You're just in time!" Naruto practically cheered as Sakura stepped out of the trees. He sat on the ground of the small clearing and gave her a wild, eager grin over his shoulder before turning right back around and focusing on the scroll in front of him. "Did you bring it?"

"Against my better judgment, I did," she said as she pulled out the small book wrapped in nondescript brown paper a clone had asked her to deliver to him. Why the clone couldn't have done it itself, she didn't know, but she had learned a long time ago that it was better not to question this kind of thing with Naruto. She'd keep what little sanity Tsunade's training had left her with a bit longer that way.

She pushed the thought aside with a shake of her head and stepped up behind him, prepared to drop the book on his lap, but froze when she recognized the ludicrously complicated swirls and lines of fuuinjutsu on the scroll in front of him. Then she noticed the brush in his hands and the bottom dropped out of her stomach.

"Nar," Her throat clenched over the word and she had to swallow heavily before she could try again. "Naruto, what exactly are you doing?"

"Experimenting!" the blonde cheered happily. Suddenly, her hopes for this conversation shot down to her stomach. Before she could react, his torso whirled around and snatched the small package out of her hands. "Thanks! This was the last piece I needed!"

"Needed for what?" she asked warily.

"My experiment," he said easily, explaining nothing. He started tearing at the wrapping of his package as he continued in an idle tone. "Geeze, Sakura, I thought you were the smart one."

Her eyebrow twitched. One hand lashed out and smacked the blonde idiot lightly, for her, upside the head. Naruto tumbled over and landed on the far side of the scroll, the book flying out of his hands in the process. A beat later, the newly-unwrapped book landed on its back right in the center of the seal.

Sakura had just enough time to recognize the aggravatingly familiar cover of Icha Icha Tactics as the seal burst into a brilliant gold. Naruto looked from her glare, to the book, and back again, then let out a quiet, "Uh oh."

"...what did you say that seal did again?" was all she could ask as a sudden, massive humming sound filled the air.

"Uhh... don't kill me?" Naruto half asked and half pleaded as the world dissolved in a flash of gold.

    ---

Gah, went just over the 30 min mark. Oh well.

Thanks. I wanted to expand it a little further, but I barely made the time limit as it was.

Hm. I'll have to see what I can come up with for that. I'll edit this when I'm ready to start writing.

It bloated up a bit, but I spent roughly an hour - that with bouts of doing some actual work.

    The Inappropriate Interruption

Minato was having a bad day.

Kushina had been in a perfect mood since the morning - a thing that was getting rarer even this early in the pregnancy - to top it off, they had decided to spend the evening with him taking a short rest from the tiresome duties of the Hokage. And he was late.

It had been this promise of a good time spent with her lovely company that had him smiling thought the most boring meeting of all time, but his patience was already wearing thin - the more it was dragging on. The envoy from one of the lesser Fire Lords was trying to weasel out of the higher mission cost - and had resorted to a certain sort of haggling that bordered on insulting.

    Yet, Minato held his smile.

“...thus, with the crops being plentiful this season, I’d like to suggest to drop the remaining week rank to D to help to handle the harvest - even as the Bandits being taken care off would help the farmers feel safer-”

Minato coughed, stopping the endless tirade. “As I have said before, the mission you request is a three week - B-rank protection detail. If you want to shorten it to a two week one - that is amenable - your offer for the last week - isn’t.”

“But, surely the Hokage understands that if the threat is removed sooner there is no need...”

This time the interruption came from a young girl bursting into the room, and Minato silently thanked all the gods for that moment of respite.

Rin, however, looked slightly panicked. “Sensei, Kushina-san is gone!”

Minato jumped from his seat, turning at the half-startled half-outraged man. “Leave, now - we’ll continue this conversation tomorrow.” Or better yet, never.

As the man opened his mouth to protest, Minato signed to the nearest ANBU - and the emissary didn’t even manage to blink as he was escorted outside.

“Tell me everything,” Minato demanded out of Rin, who blanched from his urgent tone. "Now."

“I don’t know anything,” she protested, slightly panicking. “I was supposed to meet with her for a bowl of ramen. She promised to tell me a story about one of her missions and... other things. I was supposed to keep her company until you would finish with your slave work for the day. I thought she was late - and waited - until it was entirely too late...”

Minato frowned. Kushina was never late for a ramen date. Nor had she ever tricked Rin - the girl seemed to have worn into Kushina’s heart after just a short of finally meeting his team a month ago - as their sensei’s fiancee, no less.

“No other clues?” He asked, tapping the desk to lay down a seal, as well as quickly checking his kunai.

    Rin shook her head.

    Minato jumped.

He latched onto the seal he had given to Kushina for just such an occurrence - but he had hoped to never have to use it. Wrongly, it seemed.

He arrived in a crouch, two special kunai dancing into his hands in a seamless flutter of the cloak - a few of them already flying in all directions. It was a forest - that was the only thing he noted before he had launched the Kunai.

Kushina was the only thing he was looking at, though, as the hail of three-pronged blades embedded into the nearest trees with loud thumps - creating him some movement space even as his attention was elsewhere.

    Kushina was - injured.

Minato’s eyes widened in a freezing fear - the young woman was laying sprawled on the ground, her stomach facing upwards, the red hair - in a dishevelled tangle on the ground, leaves fluttering around in the whirlwind he had arrived in.

As he saw the wound - a sharp blade poking out of her stomach, he did something no self respecting shinobi should ever do - he froze.

Please, let it be a Genjutsu. It wasn't.

There was a man further along, standing on the nearby hill.

The enemy had a badly affixed mask, as if he had just put it on, and the hood was drawn back, black - Uchiha - hair peeking out. And - a peeking line of a goggles strap.

    Minato could only blink.

“Ah, the Hiraishin,” the man - no - a kid, announced in a pompous voice. “Your most prized technique.”

“Obito?” Minato just didn’t know what to think or feel.

The kid gulped. Then, as if it had been a part of his plan, he recovered admirably. “That is correct, sensei. It was I who brought about the death of your beloved, Kushina."

“What-” Minato let one of his kunai slip from his grasp.

As it fell on the ground with a quiet, inaudible bump, it was as if he had woken up. His eyes narrowed, killing intent seeping from him in a wave of righteous anger. Obito tumbled and fell, a weird mask falling from his face, and as he hit the ground, he disappeared in a puff of smoke. A clone.

Minato put his right foot forward and stopped. Looked around. Then, turned back at Kushina. Fell on his knees beside her, raising his hands up in the air. Movements sharp - a bit too pronounced to look even remotely normal.

His expression was one of extreme pain - even rivaling his previous shock, tears were already glistening at his eyes.

    Suddenly, Kushina twitched.

He grabbed onto her, pushing her closer. “Why?!” Minato shouted loudly. “Why?”

“Hey,” she whispered to his ear. “What are you doing?”

“I have lost her!” Minato was ignoring her, pushing her closer still, his whole body shaking uncontrollably.

“Minato!” She shouted right at his ear. “I’m fine! It’s a bloody joke!”

The Hokage was still shaking as Kushina was trying to get away from his grip.

“Stop it!” She protested, going red in the face, her hair swirling around in rhythm to his shivers.

Minato fell back and landed on his back, the cloak serving as a makeshift blanket. He dragged Kushina together with him.

“Hey, watch the sword!” She shouted. “It’s sharp!”

He couldn’t hold it anymore - the silent shaking turned into something reminiscing hickups and the Hokage broke down into a booming laughter.

    Kushina started chuckling as well

He continued his mad laughter, even as both Obito and Kakashi peeked from one of the nearby trees.

“Is sensei alright?” Obito asked the white haired teammate of his.

Kakashi shrugged. “You probably went overboard with the sword,” he added as an afterthought.

“You think?” Obito poked Kakashi in the arm. “Why?”

    Kakashi sighed.

The three pronged kunai that embedded into the tree right between them made Obito pause in his badgering of the teammate.

“Don’t ever joke with things like this again.” The Hokage was standing straight at them, higher and more imposing than ever before. “I don’t take threats to my family well.” He continued on, as both boys gulped. Then, he smiled. “If something happens to Kushina or our child because of this...”

Kushina shouted from further away, standing up, and tidying her clothes up - Minato had suddenly dissappeared from under her. “Hey, give your lectures later - I thought we were having a moment just now! Besides, it was my idea.”

Minato let his hands fall down to his sides in defeat. “How did you convince my team to take part in this?”

Kakashi coughed. “No offence, sensei, but your girlfriend is...” he paused, looking at Obito.

“Rather scary sometimes,” Obito muttered. “I tried to convince her to-”

“Liar,” Kushina peeked her tongue at the boy. “They agreed that you needed an escape for today.”

Minato grumbled something under his breath.

“What was it?’ Kushina poked at his chest.

“Thanks.” He shrugged. “I think I needed that. Well, not this, but a break is a good idea.”

“Told you it would work,” Kushina flashed a victory sign and winked at her conspirators. “Dattebane!”

“Um,” came Rin’s voice from further along, as the girl looked rather out of breath from running all the way from the Hokage Tower. “Was I the only one who noticed sensei mentioning a child?”

Minato reddened rather uncharacteristically for a Hokage. “Well...”

“It’s true.” Kushina pointed out for his team, ignoring their surprise - or the lack off a visible one in Kakashi. “But keep it hush hush. Now, my wonderful Hokage, can we be finally off for our date? I believe we’re late for our reservation.”

Minato smiled uncertainty, leaving his team in something a stupor - they still were trying to warp their heads around the idea of their sensei procreating already.

“How did you know it was a game?” Kushina whispered to Minato, as they went off together, before any questions could be asked by the kids. “The blood even was my own - and Rin is a good liar - and-”

Minato peeked out his tongue in a rather unbecomingly childish imitation of her earlier action. “The Kyuubi’s chakra would have been leaking out if you would have been seriously hurt. That, and Obito would never do anything like this.”

“I knew I had forgot something,” Kushina said. “Ah well, at least we have the whole night to ourselves. Finally.”

I'll let someone else take Ceebee's, it's a bit too tied down for me (the "youth" comment implies Gai or Lee, Naruto is mentioned by name, and Kushina is referenced).

Anyone have another short one for me?
