Here's the latest attempts. For some reason most of the filters are greyed out when I try to explore. My renders are coming in as png's rather than psd's is that a possible reason?

No, Render's are supposed to be PNG, .psd files are Photoshop files that contain all the work information and haven't been merged together into a single layer image.

I've mostly given up posting on these forums, but I check in from time to time anyway. I thought it would be worth posting to give Surarrin kudos for his tutorial.

^The alien looks distorted like that because I put the render's layer underneath the background (but above the black and white layers). And I also changed the gray layer with lighting effects to a black layer with lighting. I just think it fits for this one.

Nice tutorial Surrain! I tried also. I think you should put up more tutorials, that would be very helpful! :)

I am a fan of easier methods of making sigs, but I do acknowledge that the way you work with the backgrounds is a very good way of making each one fit with the chosen render. I am also starting to like floating sigs more than I used to.

I made another one, this time with a new kind of border. It needs more work, but I think it's ok for the first try.

[/Edit] I animated it. If you're interested click
