Honestly, I actually agree with you. There are some true gems, but the majority of the space marine fare is largely shit. I don't think that I'll ever forgive them for the Grey Knights trilogy.

    Derailment over, sorry about that.

It's not like there's much of this thread to be derailed, and I certainly won't begrudge anyone their bitching about certain Black Library novels where the likes of Goto and Watson have penned such masterful works of Eldar torture-porn, Imperial Fists flatulence and vomit-contests and Lord knows what else.

The All Guardsmen Party Storytime is a series of amusing and at times awesome stories about a few Imperial Guardsmen who somehow manage to survive the decimation of their regiment only to be conscripted by the Inquisition in order to apply the appropriate amount of firepower to the problems their incompetent superiors seem to drag them into. It's basically some dude's comedic retelling of his Dark Heresy role playing campaigns where all the players took on the role of ignorant, paranoid mooks.

For anyone that's been following the All-Guardsmen Storytime thing, a new bit went up this last weekend. You can find it here.

Has anyone ever done the Emperor coming back or becoming a true god... and actually done it well? Because I would read that.

If you're looking for comedy, the video series If the Emperor had a Text-to-Speech Device is a pretty decent take on it. Or at least, I found it rather entertaining, but it struck me as fairly YMMV, for whatever that's worth.

The title pretty much says it all. Sometime around M40, a TTS gets installed on the Golden Throne and lets Emps talk again. He then proceeds to get a briefing on the current situation by the head of the Custodes and tears into the various grim-dark shenanigans of the Imperium. It's only like 15 videos in the 5-10 minute range so far, so it's worth a look if you got some time.

I haven't seen any good serious takes on the subject though, unfortunately. It's definitely the kind of thing that I'd enjoy.

I thought I would add some other fics to the list:

Elsewhen and elsewhere, is a Star Trek crossover which is pretty interesting. Anyone who wants to read about Space Marines with personality will be interested in this. Though it does have it flaws, it's one of the best stories out there. Unfinished but still very nice.

Our Masks is another curious take, this time on Death Korps of Krieg. The premise is that a DKoK regiment after suffering losses takes on recruits from local worlds. They are then indocrinated according to DKoK philosophy, which doesn't work as well as on the originals (since they aren't totally brainwashed clones bred for a specific purpose). A well fleshed out story, surprising in its quality, though sometimes over the top with real world references.

Justified Means is a short story that offers a different than usual take on Space Marines. It is more in line with their grimdark canon portrayals (I mean as per the fluff found in Codexes and Rulebooks, not the one found in BL books). If you read it you'll know what I mean.

And as topping: Death Stare of the Emperor a beginning of a fun crack fic. Could be hilarious down the road.

Love and Krieg is a series of small posts from 4chan's /tg/. A regiment of Kriegers (The 68th) park up on Terranis, an ordinary Imperial world.

The original story is a shortish fluff piece about a guy falling in love with a Krieg Guardswoman. It's quite nice, and worth the read.

There's two 'sequels', in the form of Commissar and His Maid, where the political/disciplinary officer of the Kriegers ends up with (surpise!) a Krieger for a maid.

Both the original and TC&HM were each written by a single author. They each have a solid (ish, for 4Chan) continuity.

The final piece is the Spinoffs. As per normal, the populace of /tg/ ran with an idea that they loved, producing a buttload of content. It varies in quality, location, and length; but it does all build to a nice conclusion.

    And remember:

    Terranis holds.
