Recently stumbled upon 10FastFingers, an online typing test to measure your WPM. You can create an account to keep track of your progress.

The basic test is here. Just start typing in the box and get as far as you can in the allotted minute, after which it tabulates your results, and you can click the refresh icon next to the timer to reset if you make too many mistakes to tolerate. So far my fastest is 119 WPM(position 788 of 166433 last 24 hours).

If only I could translate that to my actual writing I could knock out scenes in no time at all. So how do you guys compare?

It's one thing to type fast, another to think fast. I doubt I'll ever write scenes that quick simply because I have to think about what I write. Although I do believe that the faster you type, the easier it is to keep from filtering yourself.

    Anyway: 94 WPM, 2 mistakes. (position 5786 of 166413 - last 24 hours).

A quick half assed effort gave me 98wpm, no mistakes.

This test is pretty shitty and an inaccurate way of determining wpm. 98wpm is the amount I got when I sat for an officiated typing exam set to international standards. If I was typing at this speed during it I'd have gotten 70-85wpm.

So adjust your 'scores' accordingly for something more accurate.

Hrm, 71. 3 wrong. I've never done a test like that, I felt like it was a little laggy, and I really would have preferred it to be an actual text, since I usually type with four fingers with a bad habit of glancing at the keyboard ^^'

100 wpm with no mistakes, though I can probably hit 120 if I were willing to tolerate one or two.

100 wpm, 1 error. Probably could get another 10 or so in, cos I had to go back to correct a word.

    85, 2 mistakes.

This, however, might be a better test of skill.

And a good way to practice.

I used to be able to do 100+ with ease, but that was back when I played MMOs regularly. Nowadays I'm stuck at ~80wpm.

I get mid 90s on this test, 100-110 on others. I wonder what I'd get on a proper keyboard though, I'm using a shitty laptop one.

104 with 0 mistakes on my average work keyboard. This test does not seem accurate too me, the words are very easy and there is a lack of punctuation. Other tests would be lower.

29 with 3 mistakes. I never needed to write quickly. I have a habit of checking for double letters and such when writing english, so I don't look like an idiot here. I also got confused there and wrote wrong line, resulting in three errors.

    57 (I don't even touch type properly).

Of course WPM is faintly irrelevant for any task that actually involves thought. Among programmers there's the old "average of 10 lines per person per day" which points out that over the course of a project you spend more time thinking about the solution or correcting errors than you do actually typing.

At least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

    Pretty interesting results in here.

Yeah, that definitely gives me more trouble. If it was just knocking out the sentences on my own I might do better but the competitive nature keeps making me choke mid-way through. I'm sitting at 94 at the moment.
