Wasn't really sure where this should go, but it's writing related, so here it goes.

This site analyses writing that you paste to it, whether it be fiction or non-fiction, and then compares the style and word choice to that of famous authors. So: who do you write like?

Each of the fanfiction selections I tested scored J.K. Rowling (although presumably, that could come simply through word choice, I guess), while my original fiction landed Tolkien.

    Have fun!

Edit: blog post - Douglas Adams. Essay/forum post - James Joyce. Original fic without the scene setting legend - Dan Brown...I need to spend time in WbA.

I did this four times for different types of writing:

    Fanfic: J.K. Rowling
    Essay: Isaac Asimov
    Forum post: Dan Brown
    Poem: Chuck Palahniuk

This is pretty neat. When I pasted an entire chapter of my fic, I got J.K. Rowling. But when I chose selected scenes that weren't from Harry's point of view (and didn't have magic involved), I got matched with Vladamir Nabokov.

    Definitely a cool find, OP.

    Fanfic: JK Rowling, of course.

Random and Nonsensical Forum Post: H. G. Wells.

The answer is Vladimir Nabokov. I don't know who that is [Edit: Sedatives can mess with memory, can't believe I didn't remember Nabokov right away]. Also, Stephen King and Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm flattered by the last two.

By the way, try to pick paras that don't have a lot of fanfic specific words like Azkaban, patronus, etc, and you're likely to get better responses.

Pasted in a page from my original fiction novel:

    "I write like Chuck Palahniuk."

    Pasted another page:

    "I write like Chuck Palahniuk."

    Pasted a third page:

    "I write like Chuck Palahniuk."

....Apparently Fate/eternia reads like H.P Lovecraft.

Voices (A story I wrote in an attempt to mimic butcher came out as Douglas Adams.

Demon in the Closet is J.K

    Outlaw is JK.

    Abjuration is... also J.K

    Basically it compares words.

So, stories with 'harry potter' in it.

Yeah, you're going to be J.K

When I post an entire chapter, I get Rowling. However, when I use random scenes, I get anything -- from Dan Brown to L. Frank Baum to James Joyce to Charles Dickens. Two of my favourite scenes in terms of style and writing give me J.R.R. Tolkien and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle respectively.

Without knowing how exactly it works, there's nothing to say really -- except that I seem to have no fix style, or rather, that I can change my style to fit a certain scene, which I knew already >_>

This post gives me Stephen King, by the way.

Edit: Jon, I get Rowling for non-HP stuff too. That can't be it.

    Edit2: Wat. Nuhuh, educate thyself.

Posted a chapter of Wastelands. Rowling.

Changed some names. Rowling. (Harry -> Vladimir, Poppy - (first choice was Ada, but eventually decided on some combination of letters.)

Changed Rowling-esque terms: Wand, magic, Dementors...etc. (Tool, abilities, wolves)
and suddenly, I have the writing style of Nabokov.

    So, it's bull. :p

That should totally be the new summary for Wastelands: "A surreal blend of Harry Potter, Lolita, insanity and alcohol."

Repeating the word 'dongs' six times compared me to James Joyce.

Thinking that it might be scarily accurate, I tried 'farts' six times, expecting Joyce again, and got Kurt Vonnegut.

The name 'Harry Potter' repeated thrice said I wrote like JK Rowling.

'This test is completely fucking retarded': Steven King.

    What.

The first chapter of My Immortal got James Joyce.

    Chapter three got J.K. Rowling.

14 got J.K. Rowling, even after I changed the names/places/etc.
