    This guy self-published a short story less than two years ago as Book 1 - only 12,000 words - and now he's got thousands of reviews on Amazon (plus review blurbs by several famous authors and major media outlets). The omnibus edition containing books 1-5 is $3.99 (in the US) at the moment:
