In GoF, Mrs. Weasley conjures soup out of her wand.

Page 58-59 of the American version:

Unless the 'creamy sauce' isn't, in fact, food, but something far worse...

Comments? Is this just a fuck up on Rowling's part, or is there some sort of alternative explanation for this?

    Hermione, in the same book...
She took the soup from one place to another, not from thin air.

LOL! Silly Hermione don't you know? You only have limited super powers! Not magic.

    Like JKR apparently.

Y'know, I would have thought she would have thought about this a little more.

You've got instant-death rays, the ability to spit your soul into little pieces and store it in various objects, a device that can replay memories like DVDs, you can make living creatures out of blocks of wood...

But you can't conjure something to eat?

    There's a better example:

In CoS McGonagall conjures a plate of endless sandwiches and pumpkin juice in Snape's office.

That could possible be excused saying that it's being brought from the kitchens or something.

    Or house elves, whatever.

Also, conjured items may not last forever. In that case the sauce Molly Weasley conjured could simply be to add flavor, and would disappear after you tasted it.

I like the difference of summoning and conjuring. Mrs. Weasley summoned and combined the ingrediants for the sauce from her pantry, with a family spell.
    This allows for scarcity.

And there is a plot bunny about all that tranfigured living stuff.
What is the spell for life like sex doll?

Except Dumbledore, for obvious reasons...Wait I've never had a sex doll is there a slot in the butt?

...I feel dirty for even typing that.

One of the few things I take issue with her on. Putting limits on something that by definition is limitless is fucking stupid.

By definition, magic is a fantasy and thus anything the author wants it to be. Taking offense to that is stupid. And where are you getting this definition from?

Magic is undefinable. That is all.

Limits where put by wizards - Mr.Gamp, who wrote his laws of elemental transfiguration, and all others who accepted them. This doesn't means that permanent conjurations are impossible, only that wizards haven't discovered method yet.

If I remember correctly Dumbledore doesn't seem to have a problem conjuring food/drinks. Then again he was doing things that people thought were impossible ever since Hogwarts. At least, I hope that is what the examiner meant when he said Dumbledore could do things with a wand he had never seen before.

    Examiner: What? What?!
    Dumbledore: In the butt.
Examiner: You want to put it in my butt?
    Dumbledore nods
    Examiner: O-kay!

Maybe the problem with conjuring food isn't that it's impossible, (since wizards can conjure/transfigure inanimate objects into living, breathing animals), but rather that it's too temporary to work long enough. For example, let's say you transfigure a rock into a cheeseburger, which you then eat. However, the transfiguration reverses while the burger is in your small intestine. Ouch.

...We're not talking about transfiguration though, we're talking about conjuration. Which I think should be easy compared to half the ridiculous things that wizards can do.

And I don't recall reading about transfigured objects reversing after a set length of time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is fanon.
